At-Taib ( Arabic التيب, Egyptian Arabic- it-TEB ), also known as El Teb or Hillet Ateib , is an oasis in the Sudanese state of Al-Bahr al-Ahmar .

location

It is located in the Sudanese state of al-Bahr al-ahmar, about 650 kilometers northeast of Khartoum , south of Sawakin and about 15 kilometers south of the small coastal town of Trinkitat on the Red Sea on the way to Tokar .

history

On February 4, 1884, the Mahdist general Osman Digna was able to defeat the Anglo-Egyptian army of Baker Pasha in the first battle of El Teb and enclose the forts of Tokar and Sinkat. The British therefore sent 5000 men under Gerald Graham to regain the important coast of the Red Sea . Graham was able to defeat Osman Digna again at the Second Battle of El Teb on February 29 and reached Tokar on March 3. Despite Graham's victory in at-Taib and two weeks later in Tamai, the British had to retreat to the Sawakin position and remain there during the ten-year Mahdi rule.
