al-Bahr al-ahmar ( Arabic البحر الأحمر, DMG al-Baḥr al-aḥmar  'Red Sea') is a federal state in Sudan .

It has an area of ​​218,887 km² and around 1.4 million inhabitants. Its capital and fourth largest city in Sudan is Bur Sudan .

geography

To the east, al-Bahr al-ahmar borders the Red Sea , after which the state is named. This is followed inland by various mountain ranges from north to south ( Jibal al-Bahr al-ahmar ), between which there are dry plains. The Nubian Desert joins in the northwest .

In the north is the controversial Hala'ib triangle between Sudan and Egypt .

history

From 1919 to 1973 the area of ​​today's state of al-Bahr al-ahmar belonged to the province of Kassala . In 1973, al-Bahr al-ahmar was split off as a province within the boundaries of what is now the state of Kassala. From 1991 to 1994 the area belonged again to the newly created state of al-Sharqiyyah, which resembled the province of Kassala from 1919 to 1973. On February 14, 1994, al-Bahr al-ahmar was split off again, but this time as a federal state.

From Suakin there is a ferry connection to Jeddah . The ruins of the old town lie on a small island.
