Shamal Darfur ( Arabic شمال دارفور, German  North Darfur ) is a federal state of Sudan .

It has an area of 296,420 km², a population of 2,296,100 inhabitants (2017 calculation) and Al-Faschir is the capital.

geography

Shamal Darfur essentially consists of dry savannah . The north-east is almost deserted, so that in the last few decades the growing area for millet has been expanded to the north due to the increasing population pressure and after a few years with more rain. In the following years of drought, there were famines, as part of the fertile soil was blown away as a result of the removal of the natural vegetation near the ground and the conversion into arable land through deflation; the result is an expansion of desert and semi-desert areas.

history

From 1919 to 1974 the area of what is now the state of Shamal Darfur belonged to the province of Darfur . In 1974 the province of Shamal Darfur was split off and included the area of today's Shamal Darfur and the northern part of Gharb Darfur . From 1991 to 1994 the area of Shamal Darfur belonged again to the newly created state of Darfur, which resembled the province of Darfur from 1919 to 1974. On February 14, 1994, Shamal Darfur was split off from Darfur again, this time as a federal state and without the northern part of Gharb Darfur.

economy

Shamal Darfur's economy is primarily based on subsistence agriculture (rain-fed agriculture) with grain, fruit and tobacco growing and animal husbandry.
