Shamal Kurdufan ( Arabic شمال كردفان, German  North Kurdufan or Nordkordofan ) is a federal state in Sudan .

It has an area of ​​221,900 km² and, according to the 2008 census, around 3 million inhabitants. Its capital is al-Ubayyid , another city is an-Nahud .

The state borders on al-Chartum , Janub Kurdufan , an-Nil al-Abyad , asch-Shamaliya , Nahr an-Nil , Shamal Darfur and Dschanub Darfur . The vegetation consists mainly in thorn bush savannah. Umm Badr is located in the state .

history

From 1919 to 1974 the area of ​​what is now the state of Shamal Kurdufan belonged to the Kurdufan Province . In 1974 this province was split into the two provinces of Shamal and Dschanub Kurdufan . From 1991 to 1994 the area of ​​Shamal Kurdufan belonged again to the newly created state of Kurdufan, which resembled Kurdufan Province from 1919 to 1974. On February 14, 1994 Kurdufan was divided into the three states of Shamal, Dschanub and Gharb Kurdufan . Gharb Kurdufan was dissolved again in 2005 and divided between North and South Kordofan.

economy

The pipeline, which connects the oil fields further south with the port of Bur Sudan , runs through Shamal Kurdufan's capital al-Ubayyid to Khartoum .
