history
Al-Ubayyid had belonged to the kingdom of Muhammad Ali Pasha of Egypt since 1821 and subsequently grew to become the second largest city in Sudan. In January 1883, after a four-month siege, it was captured by the Mahdists , causing heavy damage. The Egyptian Khedive then sent an expeditionary army to retake the city and destroy the Mahdiyya (movement of the Mahdi). The company ended in disaster. The force of around 10,000 men, exhausted and demoralized by the long march, was defeated by the Mahdi's army at the Battle of Sheikan . Only after the defeat of the Mahdi Empire was the city rebuilt in 1898.
In February 2000 a helicopter crashed during a stopover in the city, and Leni Riefenstahl was among its passengers . She was on another exploration trip to the Nuba in the Nuba Mountains and survived the crash with several broken ribs.
economy
Al-Ubayyid is the main trading center for agricultural products and exports primarily gum arabic to the world market , along with sesame and peanuts .
