history

From 1919 to 1974 the area of what is now the state of Gharb Darfur belonged to the Darfur Province . In 1974 this province was divided into a southern and a northern province, so that the area of Gharb Darfur in the north belonged to the Shamal Darfur Province and in the south to the Dschanub Darfur Province . From 1991 to 1994 the area of Gharb Darfur belonged again to the newly created state of Darfur, which resembled the province of Darfur from 1919 to 1974. On February 14, 1994 Darfur was divided again, this time into the three states of Shamal, Dschanub and Gharb Darfur.
