Bainbridge Island is a city and island in Kitsap County in northwest Washington state . It's in the Puget Sound . 23,025 inhabitants live on it (as of the 2010 census ).

history

In 1792 George Vancouver anchored with the HMS Discovery at the south end of the island. On May 29, he named the south end Restoration Point in honor of Charles II. During his exploration of the area he did not discover the Agate Passage , so that Bainbridge Island is listed on his maps as a peninsula rather than an island.

In 1841 the American naval officer Charles Wilkes named the island after the Commodore William Bainbridge , who is best known for his victory over the HMS Java in the British-American War .

The most important industries on the island were forestry and shipbuilding. The island was known for its large and easily accessible cedar trees , which were particularly in demand for ship masts. Kitsap County's first county seat was in Port Madison at the north end of the island. During World War II , the island's Japanese-born residents were among the first Japanese / Japanese-American to be relocated as part of the internment of Japanese-American Americans . They came to the Minidoka War Relocation Center in Idaho .

The island has been administratively part of the same parish since 1991 when the City of Winslow incorporated the rest of the island and renamed it City of Bainbridge Island .
