Kitsap County is a county in the state of Washington in the United States with a population of 251,133. The county seat is in Port Orchard .

history
Kitsap County was formed on January 16, 1857 from parts of King Counties and Jefferson Counties . It was named after Chief Kitsap , a leader of the Suquamish .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 231,969 people. There were 86,416 households and 61,355 families. The population density was 226 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.27% white, 2.87% African American , 1.62% American Indian , 4.39% Asian American , 0.78% Pacific islander and 1.43% from other races ; 4.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.14% of the population.
Of the 86,416 households, 36.00% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 57.70% were married couples living together, 9.50% were single mothers. 29.00% were not families. 22.60% are single households and 7.60% have someone living there who is 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.05.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.80% of residents under 18 years of age, 9.20% between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.60% between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.80% between 45 and 64 years of age 10.60% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 102.70 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 101.20 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 46,840 , and the median income for a family was $ 53,878. Males had a median income of $ 39,889 and females $ 28,586. The per capita income was $ 22,317. 8.80% of the population and 6.30% of families are below the poverty line . 10.90% of these were under 18 years of age and 6.00% were 65 years of age or older.
