Adams County is a county in the state of Washington in the United States . The county seat is Ritzville , the largest town is Othello .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 4998 square kilometers of which 12 square kilometers (0.25%) are water. It is bordered clockwise by counties: Lincoln , Whitman , Franklin, and Grant .

history

The county was spun off on November 28, 1883 from parts of Whitman County . It was named after the second President of the United States, John Adams .

As of the 2000 census , Adams County had 16,428 people in 5,229 households and 4,094 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.96 percent white, 0.28 percent African American, 0.68 percent Native American, 0.60 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island region and 30.69 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.75 percent were descended from two or more races. 16.3 percent of the population were of German descent and 1.2 percent said they spoke German as their mother tongue.

Of the 5,229 households, 44.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 63.5 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers. 21.7 percent were not families, 18.7 percent were single households, and 7.7 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over.
