Island County is a county in the state of Washington in the United States with 71,558 residents. The county seat is in Coupeville .

The county covers an area of 1,340 square kilometers; of which 800 square kilometers (59.71 percent) are water.
history
Island County was formed on January 6, 1853 from parts of Thurston County . The county owes its name to the fact that it is located on two islands, Whidbey Island and Camano Island .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 71,558 people. There were 27,784 households and 20,254 families. The population density was 133 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.17% White, 2.36% African American, 0.97% Native American, 4.19% Asian, 0.44% Pacific Islander, and 1.43% other races Groups; 3.44% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.97% of the population.
Of the 27,784 households, 33.30% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 62.20% were married couples living together, 7.80% were single mothers. 27.10% were not families. 21.50% were single households and 8.30% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.93 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.50% of residents under 18 years of age, 8.50% between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.00% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.70% between 45 and 64 years of age 14.30% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 100.40 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 97.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 45,513 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,363. Males had a median income of $ 35,331 versus $ 25,612 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,472. 7.00% of the population and 5.10% of families are below the poverty line. 8.80% of these were under 18 years of age and 4.40% were 65 years of age or older.
