Snohomish County is a county in the metropolitan area of Seattle in the US state of Washington in the United States . 713,335 (2010) inhabitants lived here. The county seat is in Everett .
geography
The county covers an area of 5,689 square kilometers, of which 5,411 square kilometers are land and 278 square kilometers (4.89 percent) are water.
To the west, the county lies on the Puget Sound Bay . Here the landscape is flat. In the southwest of the county are the two 40,000-inhabitant cities Edmonds and Lynnwood , which are strongly integrated into the greater Seattle area. The adjacent Bothell is only partially part of Snohomish County. The much smaller town of Woodway in the far southwest of the county was founded in 1958 only to forestall a possible incorporation into Edmonds. It was created by subdividing a coastal forest into exclusively large plots, so that it has the highest per capita income (status: 2010 census) in the county.
The east, however, is mountainous and hardly populated. The highest mountain is the 3,123 meter high Glacier Peak , an active stratovolcano of the Cascade Range .
Two rivers flow into the sea in the county area:
- The Snohomish River flows into Port Gardner Bay , part of Puget Sound , between Everett and Marysville . Under this name, it is only 20 miles long, and a major tributary from the county is the Skykomish River . Lake Roesiger east of Everett, which is a popular destination for excursions, also belongs to its river system .
- The Stillaguamish River flows further north into Port Susan , also part of Port Gardner Bay . It consists of a north and a south arm, which unite at Arlington for the last 35 kilometers. The most important tributary of the northern arm is the Boulder River, which rises in the Cascade Range .
history
- The county name refers to the Snohomish Indian tribe who used to live in the area.
- The Donation Land Claim Act of 1850, a forerunner of the Homestead Act , opened the land to white settlers. After the Treaty of Point Elliott of 1855, the Indians had to move to reservations. This is how the Tulalip Indian Reservation was created , in which around 10,000 people live on 91 km² between the coast and Interstate 5 .
- The county was founded in 1861. The administrative seat was the town of Snohomish , founded in 1858 (until 1871 Cadyville ). In 1897 she lost this position to Everett.
- The Monte Cristo settlement , which experienced a brief boom in 1893 with 1,200 inhabitants, is now a ghost town .
- In 1953 the military Jim Creek Naval Radio Station was built, through which commands can be transmitted to submerged submarines ever since.
- Large parts of the Oso settlement were destroyed in a landslide in 2014, killing over 40 people.
- Also in 2014 there was a rampage at Pilchuck High School in the city of Marysville , which briefly made the city known nationwide.
Airport and Boeing factory
The Paine Field , also known as Paine Field, opened the 1936th The directly adjacent Boeing Everett plant has existed since 1968 and today has the largest assembly hall in the world.
