history
Although people who came from Europe had been living in Bothell since 1870, it was not officially recognized as a site until April 14, 1909.
The Sammamish Indians lived in the region around Bothell before the European settlers. They were relocated as a result of the Puget Sound War in 1856.
Around 1870 Columbus S. Greenleaf and George R. Wilson settled with their families near what is now the city center of Bothell. More families followed in the next few years. In 1876, the Canadian George Brackett bought land and built a camp north of the Sammamish River. This is where Bothell's Downtown is now. Later a school, shops and a sawmill followed.
In 1885 Brackett sold 80 acres of land to David Bothell, who was a Pennsylvania settler. In 1888 the previously unnamed place was named Bothell. In the same year a railway line was built in the city, which was responsible for the transport of coal from Issaquah .
Bothell's importance to regional shipping increased in the years that followed, but when the Army Corps of Engineers decided to dredge and straighten the Sammamish River, shipping came to an abrupt end for Bothell, while cities like Seattle benefited.
After the Second World War , the population rose from 1,000 residents in 1950 to 30,000 in 2000 thanks to a better road network and the post-war economy. Similar to Kirkland, Bothell was mostly only a residence for commuters who worked in Seattle. But in the 1990s software and biotechnology companies also settled in Bothell themselves.
