history
The place was founded on April 29, 1892. The place was initially called Gilman, but was renamed Issaquah in 1899. The name Issaquah comes from the local Indians. However, the exact origin is controversial. Presumably they imitated the ducks' croaking while collecting food near the lake, and this is where Issaquah emerged as the name of the place. Until the Great Depression in 1929, coal mining at Tiger Mountain and the lumber business shaped the community's economy. Boeing built factories and workshops in the town in the early 20th century. The company built its first wooden seaplane there and tested it on Lake Sammamish. At the end of the 20th century, Microsoft opened offices in the community. In 1996, the retail group Costco Wholesale moved its headquarters from Kirkland to Issaquah.
