Cougar Mountain

The Cougar Mountain is a summit of the Issaquah Alps in King County in the State of Washington . It is part of the highlands in the suburbs of Seattle , which are summarized as the Eastside , and the lowest and westernmost summit of the Alps. About two thirds of Cougar Mountain are populated; it is home to several neighborhoods and parishes such as Lakemont, but the wooded heart of the hill was officially designated as Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park by King County in June 1983 . The Cougar Mountain Zoo is also located on Cougar Mountain .

geology

Cougar Mountain was formed in the Miocene when tectonic forces unfolded West Washington along an axis trending northwest and created the Newcastle Anticline . This anticline brought to the surface older sediments and volcanic rocks from the Eocene and Oligocene which, due to erosion, now form the surface of Cougar Mountain. The north end of Cougar Mountain is very different from the Seattle Fault , which runs along Interstate 90 . The Seattle Fault caused a major earthquake about 1,100 years ago.

ecology

The Cougar Mountain is part of the Level IV Eastern Puget Uplands ecoregion as defined by the EPA . This ecoregion represents a transition from the habitats on Puget Sound to the forests of the Cascades . The natural conditions on Cougar Mountain are therefore more similar to those of the Sammamish Plateau than the rest of the Issaquah Alps.

Cougar Mountain is home to species and habitats that were once more common around Puget Sound. Intensive deforestation has limited the diversity of the ecosystem .
