history

Bonanza Peak was originally called North Star Mountain, while a smaller mountain in the southwest was named Bonanza Peak. However, the first USGS topographical map of the region from 1904 incorrectly mixed up the names; this designation was subsequently adopted.

Bonanza Peak was first climbed in 1937 by Curtis Ijames, Barrie James and Joe Leuthold, all members of the Mazamas .
