The Chelan County is a county in the US state of Washington of the United States . The county seat is Wenatchee .

Lake Chelan is in the county . With a depth of 452 m, it is the third deepest lake in the United States and the ninth deepest on earth. The county covers an area of ​​7,753 square kilometers; of which 187 square kilometers (2.41 percent) are water surfaces.

history

The county was established on March 13, 1899. The name of the county goes to the Indian tribe of Chelan back. The name is derived from a word from a Salish language , Tsi - Laan , which means deep water . Lake Chelan and Chelan River were named after the same word .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 66,616 people. There were 25,021 households and 17,364 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 83.63% White, 0.26% African American, 0.99% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, and 12.19% other races Groups; 2.14% were from two or more races.
