Yakima County is a county in the state of Washington in the United States . The county seat is Yakima .

geography

The county is located in the Cascade Mountains , the highest mountain is Mount Adams (3742 m above sea level ). The two largest rivers in the county are the Yakima River and the Columbia River . The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Kittitas County , Grant County , Benton County , Klickitat County , Skamania County , Lewis County, and Pierce County .

The county had a population of 222,581 as of the 2000 census . There were 73,993 households and 54,606 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.60% White, 0.97% African American, 4.48% Native American, 0.95% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, and 24.43% other races Groups; 3.48% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 35.90% of the population.

Of the 73,993 households, 39.70% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 55.80% were married couples living together, 12.50% were single mothers. 26.20% were not families. 21.50% were single households and 9.60% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.96 and the average family size was 3.44 people.

For the entire county, the population was 31.80% below the age of 18, 9.80% between the ages of 18 and 24, 27.50% between the ages of 25 and 44, and 19.70% between the ages of 45 and 64 11.20% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 99.60 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 97.10 males.

The median income for a household in the 34,828 USD , and the median income for a family was 39,746 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,620 versus $ 24,541 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,606. 19.70% of the population and 14.80% of families are below the poverty line. 27.20% of these were under 18 years of age and 11.30% were 65 years of age or older.
