Yakima (until 1918 North Yakima ) is a city in central Washington and the seat of Yakima County .

It has 93,986 inhabitants (as of 2016) and is located in the Yakima Valley. The name comes from the indigenous people of Yakima , today is the Indian Reservation Yakama Indian Reservation in the south / south-west of Yakima.

The city has an area of ​​53.4 km². Major industries are fruit growing , especially the cultivation of wine (see Yakima Valley AVA ).

The military maintains training areas and ammunition stores in the area. The NSA operates the Yakima Research Station . The public radio station KDNA broadcasts a Spanish language program for the Hispanic community in Yakima.

On South 48th Avenue, Belinda Mulrooney bought 22 acres of land in 1909 and built a large stone house, Carbonneau Castle, on it.
