The Yakima Research Station, northeast of Yakima , Washington , is an NSA location from which Intelsat communications over the Pacific are monitored as part of the ECHELON program . The historic John Wayne Pioneer Trail leads through the military grounds .

The station is to be relocated to the much larger Aerospace Data Facility at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, Colorado over the next few years .
