Aurora [ əˈɹəʊɹɚ / əˈɹɔɹɚ ] ( Latin for dawn ) is a city in Arapahoe County , Adams County, and Douglas Counties in the US state of Colorado . The place has 325,078 inhabitants (status: 2010) on an area of 369.7 km².
geography
Aurora's geographic coordinates are 39 ° 42 ' N , 104 ° 48' W (39.695887, −104.808101). The city is officially located at an altitude of 1668 m , but the lowest point of the city with 1611 m is at the point where the Sand Creek in northwestern Aurora leaves the urban area, almost three hundred meters lower than the highest point with 1899 m near the southern border within Douglas County at the intersection of Inspiration Road and Gartrell Road.

According to the United States Census Bureau from 2000, the city has an area of 370 square kilometers, of which 0.52 km² (= 0.17%) were water. Due to expansions, the area increased to 401 km² at the time of the United States Census 2010 . The city is thus larger in area than Denver and ranks 54th in the United States.
Aurora is in a cold, semi-arid climate ( climate classification according to Köppen and Geiger : BSk ).

At the time of the 2000 United States Census, Aurora was inhabited by 276,393 people. The population density was 748.9 people per km ². There were 109,260 housing units at an average of 296.0 per km². The Aurora population was 48.9% White , 14.5% Black or African American , 0.8% Native American , 4.4% Asian , 0.2% Pacific Islander , and 8.1% of other races belonged to and 4.2% named two or more races. 19.8% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The residents of Aurora were distributed to 105,625 households out of which 35.5% had children under the age of 18. 46.9% of households were married, 13.1% had a female head of household without a husband and 34.8% were not families. 27.4% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 5.7% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.19.
The population was divided into 27.6% minors, 10.1% 18–24 year olds, 34.7% 25–44 year olds, 20.2% 45–64 year olds and 7.4% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 women there were 98.1 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 95.8 men.
The median household income in Aurora was 46,507 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 52,551 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 35,963, compared with $ 30,080 for women. Rail transport
The Kansas City – Denver line, completed in 1870 by the Kansas Pacific Railway , runs through Aurora . Today the route is operated by the Union Pacific Railroad . Several industrial sidings lead from this route to the north and south.
To the south through the urban area there was also a line operated by the Union Pacific, today dismantled, which connected the Bunell Fitzsimons Army Hospital , Lowry Air Force Base and Buckley Air National Guard Base to the rail network.

Rampage at Batman premiere
In the early morning of July 20, 2012, there was a rampage at a premiere of the film The Dark Knight Rises , in which twelve moviegoers were shot dead and over 50 others were seriously injured in the Century 16 Movie Theater .
