Claire Austin
Claire Austin (born November 21, 1918 in Yakima (Washington) as Augusta Marie Johnson , † June 17, 1994 ) was an American blues and jazz singer . She not only had the ability to perform in the style of the early blues singers, but could also authentically interpret swing standards .
Life and accomplishments
Austin began performing in nightclubs in the American Northwest from 1936 after graduating from high school . She also toured with her husband's band, drummer Chuck Austin, in the 1940s. To raise the three children together, she then took a break and worked as an accountant in West Sacramento . From 1951 she was occasionally active again and performed together with Turk Murphy . In 1954 she played an album with Kid Ory . More albums from Austin under his own name followed. It remained active until the 1970s. According to Tom Lord , she was involved in nine recording sessions between 1952 and 1975.
