Steve Mahre (born May 10, 1957 in Yakima , Washington ) is a former American ski racer .

biography

He was active in the Ski World Cup with his twin brother Phil in the 1980s . In his career he won 9 world cup races (2 times in giant slalom , 6 times in slalom and 1 time in combination). At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , he won silver in slalom behind his brother. His greatest success was the surprising win of the giant slalom world championship title in 1982 in Schladming . While his brother Phil, who was ten minutes older and higher, was eliminated, Steve laid the foundations for success in the first run with the fastest time, while the big favorite Ingemar Stenmark was only fifth, a clear gap. The Mahre brothers now run a training center in Park City , Utah .
