Season course

There was parity in the discipline classification of the men's downhill both in terms of points and victories (115 and 3 respectively) between Peter Müller and Steve Podborski , but the victory fell to the Canadian. For the first and so far only time (as of October 2018), the USA was able to win a Nations Cup ranking (specifically for the women).

Cancellations, postponements

As in 1977/78, this season was quite disorderly due to various weather conditions.

  • Problems immediately arose because of the snow conditions in Val-d'Isère , which is why the women's run scheduled for December 2nd was postponed to December 3rd, but then had to be canceled; the rest of the program has been temporarily postponed by 24 hours. 40 to 50 cm of fresh snow from November 29 secured at least part of the program. Suddenly it seemed as if the women's downhill, u. zw on December 7th, and then on December 8th also the Piancavallo descent planned for December 11th here in Val-d'Isère, but left snowfall (1.5 m) in the night of December 8th not even a visit to the slopes, and since more snowfalls were announced and the organizers showed no interest in the descent scheduled for December 9th due to the high costs, it was promised that these two descents in January as "second descents" in other World Cup cities perform. In addition, there should have been a women's slalom in Limone on December 7th.
  • The men's downhill and giant slalom were planned for December 5th and 6th in Val-d'Isère, with the downhill run on December 6th; the giant slalom on December 7th was therefore not possible because the giant slalom in Aprica was already on the program on December 8th; it was added on February 9 in Kirchberg in Tirol .
  • On December 11th, a men's giant slalom was scheduled in Cortina d'Ampezzo starting at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., but it was not run until December 15.
  • The for 18./19. The two women's runs planned for December in Bad Kleinkirchheim had to be relocated to Saalbach-Hinterglemm.
  • The men's downhill run in Crans-Montana planned for December 20th had to be postponed by one day. Violent squalls had initially not allowed a training run on December 19.
  • After the women's giant slalom in Maribor , which was planned for January 2nd, was canceled, a women's slalom was planned there on January 3rd and 4th. The first of these could be driven under the most difficult conditions (rain), with 60% of the runners not making it into the classification. The second giant slalom was scheduled for around January 10th in Morzine.
  • The women's downhill run scheduled for January 8 in Pfronten was also canceled. For the time being, it was planned that a giant slalom would be held on January 8th and 9th. And the men's downhill run planned for January 9 in Morzine was also at risk and ultimately failed. The Morzine descent was canceled on January 8th because it was raining unabated there and no training sessions were possible - so Kitzbühel had another double descent.
  • The giant slalom planned for January 10th in Morzine, however, was already skied on January 9th, whereby a lot of runners, i.e. the technicians , had to be ordered to Morzine first, whereby the ÖSV starters Robert Zoller and Hans Wallinger got stuck because of an avalanche. The second giant slalom for women, actually the replacement for Maribor, could not be held.
  • The Lauberhorn run started on January 23, but was canceled after 13 runners due to the weather, which prevented a possible seven-fold victory for the Austrians, because at this point (08) brackets were (09) Stock, (06) Weirather, ( 02) Höflehner, (07) Resch, (13) Wirnsberger and (12) Uli Spieß seven of the ÖSV in the front; on rank 8 (11) Podborski as the best non-Austrian. The race was restarted the next day (with the start moved about 900 m downwards) - the slalom was driven on the afternoon of January 24th, with Joël Gaspoz, who was sixth for the time being, through FIS delegate Heinz Krecek for illegal advertising was disqualified on the gloves. The combination, in which only nine runners were classified, was carried out with the Adelboden giant slalom on January 19. There was no Austrian in the classification - and apart from the winner Zurbriggen, who was referred to as a “newcomer”, there were practically unknown runners or the men who usually appear at the end of such classifications, such as Hubertus von Hohenlohe or the Belgian Henri Mollin.

Injuries

  • Hans Enn was battered at the beginning of the season, he came back into the top ranks for the first time at the world championships. Although he took part in FIS races again (9th place in a giant slalom in Ausservillgraten on January 8th), he still paused in the World Cup. He did not start again until Adelboden, where he finished 17th, furthermore “Favorite is called Stenmark” from the Arbeiter-Zeitung. Vienna January 19, 1982, page 13.
  • Klaus Heidegger suffered a broken ankle in his fall during giant slalom training in Val-d'Isère (December 5) and had to wear a cast for about three weeks. He only started the slalom in Wengen on January 24th, where he started with No. 36, finished 46th after the 1st run with 4.43 s - and (like all other runners after 45th place) for the 2nd run was no longer permitted. (Please refer to the source under the footnote with the heading “I get him” and he has it ”in the“ Arbeiterzeitung ”of January 25, 1982, page 9.)
  • During the first descent from Saalbach-Hinterglemm on December 18, several runners in the first group fell, with Hanni Wenzel's one having more lasting effects. The overstretching of the inner ligament in her left knee turned out to be so severe that she was put on a plaster cast that she had to wear for six weeks. But her injury turned out to be even more severe, it was found in the anterior cruciate ligament, so that an operation in Hohenems was imminent. This practically excluded their participation in the upcoming World Championships.
  • Andrea Haaser suffered a central hip dislocation with a fracture during a fall during ski tests on the Tauplitz , which meant a longer loss for her.

Other events

  • Franz Klammer achieved another victory on December 6th with his victory in the descent from Val-d'Isère (his third at this location) after 1,366 days (Laax 1978).
  • One of the biggest sensations was at the men's downhill on December 13th in Val Gardena, when the Briton Konrad Bartelski with start no. 28 made the leading Erwin Resch (start number 5) tremble and ultimately finished in second place 0.11 s behind.
  • At the slalom on December 14th in Cortina there was for the third time (after the combinations December 7th / 8th 1979 in Val-d'Isère and January 6th / 10th 1981 Morzine / Garmisch-Partenkirchen) a double victory for the Mahre- Twins, but this time Steve (with just 0.08 s) was ahead. - In addition, two runners with higher start numbers achieved World Cup ranks: Hubert Strolz with No. 36 in eighth place and Pirmin Zurbriggen with No. 81 (!) In twelfth place (although his time lag of 2.86 s was not too great).
  • Werner Grissmann continued to confirm his status as a member of the ÖSV national team, but his days seemed to be numbered. For the departure on January 9th in Morzine (which could not take place) he was not even scheduled for a qualification. This gradual "withdrawal of confidence" (disregard for the nominations) ultimately caused the Lienzer to resign.
  • With his first win of the season in the giant slalom in Morzine, which was brought forward to January 9th, Ingemar Stenmark overtook Austria's five-time overall World Cup winner Annemarie Moser-Pröll in the all-time winner list ; he now had 63 victories, the Salzburg woman had ended her career with 62 successes after the 1979/80 season.
  • On the same day, January 9th, the ÖSV women suffered a heavy defeat in the giant slalom in Oberstaufen ; Of the ten who started, four were eliminated in the first and five in the second - only Erika Gfrerer remained in 17th place (5.31 seconds behind).
  • Ingemar Stenmark set a new and to date (February 15, 2019) record lead of 3.16 s (compared to Phil Mahre) at the slalom in Kitzbühel on January 17th, and eighth-placed Stig Strand was already 5.02 seconds behind.
  • It was on January 19th at the men's giant slalom in Adelboden that it was broadcast on TV for the first time.

particularities

In the women's slalom and giant slalom on March 20 and 21, 1982 in Alpe d'Huez , the slalom scheduled for March 20 could not be carried out in full due to the weather or was canceled after the first round (in the lead by Tamara McKinney ) the second round only carried out on March 21st. But on March 21st, the giant slalom was driven first in the morning, followed by the outstanding slalom run in the afternoon. Erika Hess won both races .

Premier victories

Men's:

  • Joël Gaspoz at the giant slalom in Aprica on December 8th, where he won with two fastest times by a clear margin (1.98 s)
  • Erwin Resch on the descent in Val Gardena on December 13th.
  • Boris Strel at the giant slalom in Cortina d'Ampezzo on December 15, which was also the first victory for Yugoslavia in this discipline - and it was a surprise victory, because Strel was not one of the elite riders (he wore the No. 18); he set the second best time in both rounds. Strel was the second winner for Yugoslavia after slalom winner Bojan Križaj - and in fact it should be the only victory for the Yugoslav association in a World Cup giant slalom. His successor was Žan Kranjec, who rode for the Slovenian association, on December 19, 2018 in Saalbach-Hinterglemm .
  • Pirmin Zurbriggen began his series of 40 World Cup victories on January 24th in the "Lauberhorn Combination" in Wengen and also scored his first victory in an individual discipline on March 24th at the giant slalom in San Sicario .

Women:

  • The victory in the combination of the downhill run from Saalbach-Hinterglemm and the slalom in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains (December 19/21) meant the first top podium in the World Cup for Christin Cooper ; she achieved two more slalom victories (January 23 in Berchtesgaden and March 27 in Montgenèvre ).
  • For Marie-Cécile Gros-Gaudenier , her first World Cup victory was on December 18th in the downhill in Saalbach-H. her only one. She was also the first female downhill winner for France in ten years ( Jacqueline Rouvier on December 11, 1971 in Val-d'Isère; that is, Gros-Gaudenier achieved the 15th ever French women's downhill victory in the 108th women's downhill World Cup; Rouvier had no . 27 won).
  • For Elisabeth Chaud , who is still unknown internationally , her first victory (giant slalom on December 22nd in Chamonix ) was also her only one; she was fourth after the first run.
  • Holly Flanders won the downhill run from Bad Gastein on January 18 , a day later it was also the maiden victory for Sylvia Eder at the same location, making her the youngest ever winner of a World Cup downhill run up to the current date (February 15, 2019). While Flanders landed another victory shortly afterwards (departure on February 13th in Arosa ), Eder had to wait about twelve years and eleven months for it (December 3rd, 1994 at the Super-G in Vail ).
  • Ursula Konzett celebrated her two World Cup victories, both in slalom, in the current season on January 22nd in Lenggries and on March 3rd in Waterville Valley .

First super Gs

For the time being, on December 10th in La Villa on the Alting slope (2,600 m long, 680 m HD, course setter JP Schatelard, SWE) the men skied the first Super-G in ski history; Pirmin Zurbriggen won in 2.18.00 ahead of Wolfram Ortner + 0.73 and Bojan Križaj + 0.93 - the general opinion was: "Nice and interesting, but very physically tough". The women tested their “super giant slalom” on March 23rd in San Sicario (shortly afterwards it was called “Super G”). The win went to Cindy Nelson ahead of Irene Epple , Epple ; Rank 5 Sigrid Wolf , rank 9 Erika Hess , rank 10 Ingrid Eberle .

Resignations

In addition to greats like Piero Gros and Josef Walcher and Austria's "joker" Werner Grissmann , there were Wanda Bieler , Ingrid Eberle , Torill Fjeldstad , Abigail Fisher , Cornelia Pröll and Jean-Luc Fournier , Jarle Halsnes , Dave Murray and Bohumír Zeman ; furthermore Wolfram Ortner in October 1982.

Race outside the World Cup

On December 11th, Holly Flanders won a downhill run on the Zwölferkogel in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, which was advertised as the “International Salzburg State Championship”, with a 0.01 second lead over her compatriot Cindy Oak , followed by the two ÖSV runners Sigrid Wolf and Andrea Haaser.
