biography

Wirnsberger is a graduate of the ski school and the ski trade school Schladming . He made his debut in the World Cup on December 17, 1976 in the downhill run from Val Gardena , where he finished seventh. On January 8, 1977, he finished third on the podium for the first time in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . At the end of his first World Cup season, he finished eighth in the downhill classification. He was able to repeat this result with two podium places in the 1977/78 season . At his first major event, the 1978 World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, he finished 19th.

On January 27, 1979, Wirnsberger celebrated his first World Cup victory in the downhill from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and on March 3, he also won the downhill from Lake Placid . With these successes he came second in the Downhill World Cup in the 1978/79 season behind the Swiss Peter Müller . The 1979/80 season began with his third World Cup victory in the downhill from Val-d'Isère . The highlight of this winter was the Olympic Games in Lake Placid. Wirnsberger won the silver medal in downhill skiing behind his Austrian teammate Leonhard Stock .

In the World Cup, Wirnsberger continued to perform well over the next few seasons. At the 1982 World Cup in Schladming , he finished twelfth. In 1983 and 1984, however, he was unable to place in the top ten in the Downhill World Cup for the first time. The ÖSV internal qualification for the Olympic Games 1984 he did not succeed. In the 1984/85 season Wirnsberger returned to the top of the world. After his last victory on December 7, 1979 in the downhill in Val-d'Isère - on January 20, 1985 in the downhill from Wengen, he won his fourth World Cup victory and came on the podium three more times. He finished third in the Downhill World Cup and ninth in the overall World Cup. At the 1985 World Championships in Bormio , he finished sixth. In the 1985/86 season , Wirnsberger was able to improve even further: With a total of four victories, he won the Downhill World Cup and reached eighth place in the overall World Cup. The next two seasons were less successful. In 1986/87 he was on the podium only once and fell back to ninth place in the Downhill World Cup. Also at the 1987 World Cup he only came in 24th place. It went even worse in 1987/88 when he only reached 17th place in the downhill classification and again failed to qualify for an Olympic participation.

In the 1988/89 season Wirnsberger was able to improve again. He made it onto the podium twice and finished fifth in the Downhill World Cup. At the 1989 World Cup in Vail , he finished eighth. Wirnsberger reached his last podium on December 8, 1990 with third place in Val-d'Isère. At the 1991 World Cup in Saalbach-Hinterglemm , he was tenth. In the World Cup, Wirnsberger was no longer in the top ten, which is why he had to forego participating in the Olympic Games in 1992, whereupon he ended his career.

Wirnsberger took part in 151 downhill runs in 16 World Cup years. He finished 78 times in the top ten in this discipline, achieved 8 wins and another 19 podiums. He was also in the top ten several times in combinations. In addition, he won the Olympic silver medal in 1980, three top 10 results at world championships and the victory in the Downhill World Cup in 1986.

Today he runs a company in Vordernberg.
