The white-throated surgeonfish ( Acanthurus leucosternon ) or Weißbrust surgeonfish is a kind from the family of surgeonfish . It is distributed in the Indian Ocean from the west coast of Kenya to South Africa, on the coasts of the Maldives and the Seychelles to Indonesia . It can mainly be seen in shallow water around coral reefs .
Appearance
Like all surgeonfish, the white-throated surgeonfish has a laterally flattened body with a terminal mouth. The sides of the body are colored bright blue, the dorsal fin is yellow. The base of the tail also shows a yellow color. The anal fin, the caudal fin and the pectoral fins, on the other hand, have a bluish tint. The white-throated surgeonfish's head is black. He also has a white spot on his throat, which becomes lighter when excited.
The white-throated surgeon fish, which lives vegetarian on thread algae, is one of the surgeon fish species that form feeding schools. This behavior pattern allows them to gain access to feeding grounds in which they would be inferior to more aggressive food competitors as a single fish and would be chased away by them. If there is an abundant supply of food, however, these swarms are not formed.
