The 1985/86 season of the Alpine Ski World Cup organized by the FIS began on December 7, 1985 in Sestriere (women). On 17./18. August 1985 two men's races took place in Las Leñas in Argentina , followed by a three-month break until the beginning of December. The season ended on March 23, 1986 in Bromont .

38 races were held for the men (13  downhill runs , 5  super-G , 7  giant slaloms , 13  slaloms ). For women there were 32 races (10 downhill runs, 5 super-G, 8 giant slaloms, 9 slaloms). There were also seven combined scores for men and five for women. There were also two parallel races for men and one for women, but these only counted for the Nations Cup . In the fourth year of his membership in the World Cup program, there were also the "small balls" in the Super-G discipline for the first time (so far, the results were part of the giant slalom).

This season was an interim year without a World Cup or Olympic Winter Games.

Season course

Scoring system and innovations

The five best results from downhill, slalom, giant slalom and three from Super-G (which was no longer included in giant slalom, but was rated for the first time) and combination counted for both women and men in the overall and individual classification.

The FIS started to bring the women's and men's races closer together. So there was no longer any need to avoid the women's competitions, they also concentrate more on the weekends. The "thirty-one rule" for slalom and giant slalom, which had already been tried and tested last season, was fully implemented for the women. In the case of men, it was initially limited to December 31, and afterwards they actually operated again according to the "old system", but from 1986/87 this new rule also applied there. The starting order of these “thirty finals” was different, with mainly the runners from 30 to one or from 15 to one and then 16 to 30 being sent into the race. The decision was made by the FIS race director, who primarily had to consider the slope conditions. There was also a third variant, the so-called “super bibbo rule”, according to which the driver drove from five to one and then from six to thirty. An exception should apply to slaloms that were combined with a combination. Here, combiners who were not among the top 30 should drive afterwards (although they were not allowed to influence the slalom rating under any circumstances). (The start of the men's slalom season on December 1 in Sestriere was from thirty to one - please refer to the source under “Other events”.)

More suggestions:

  • World Cup co-founder Serge Lang brought up the discussion that racers should receive prize money, pointing out that even athletes "would make money".
  • The Salzburg ski manufacturer Toni Arnsteiner requested changes as early as 1985 and presented a catalog of measures during the Kitzbühel weekend (18/19 January). Among other things, there should be no deviations with regard to the starting order ("rule of thirty") in slalom and giant slalom or, as in motorsport, the ski brand should also be mentioned in the rankings.

Premier victories

Men's:

  • Rok Petrovič won the first slalom race of the season in Sestriere on December 1st - and won another four times, which helped him to overall victory in the discipline.
  • Slalom world champion Jonas Nilsson came on December 16 in this discipline in Madonna di Campiglio to his first victory.
  • With Johan Wallner , who did not yet belong to the group of elite runners (start number 20), a second Swede achieved his first (but only) victory in heavy snowfall at the slalom in Berchtesgaden on January 12th .
  • Not only that the slalom Olympic third from 1984, Didier Bouvet, got his first (and only) victory in the slalom of Parpan (January 21) and with start no. 23 was one of the underdogs - he ended an almost 13-year win for the French men's team in an individual discipline. It was also a slalom that Jean-Noël Augert won on March 23, 1973 in Heavenly Valley .
  • Richard Pramotton got his first success on January 28th at the "Giant Slalom Classic" in Adelboden .
  • It was not until February 21 that Günther Mader achieved his first victory, that of the peculiar combination of the slalom from February 2 in Wengen (where he was 5th) with the downhill in Åre (46th; he had the last starting number). fix. Shortly afterwards he succeeded in winning the Geilo slalom (while he had already achieved some good results in the few World Cup appearances in the giant slalom and Super-G, he had to grapple with high starting numbers in the slalom until 1986 in Kitzbühel - Berchtesgaden No. 60, Kitzbühel No. 63, now when he won he already had No. 20)

Women:

  • Michaela Gerg won on December 12th with start no. 24 the descent in Val d'Isère, overshadowed by Christine Putz's heavy fall.
  • On January 25th, the start no. Michaela Marzola , who started the race with 30 good results before, won Elisabeth Kirchler's first victory in this discipline at the Super-G in Megève .
  • For the first, but also only, time Monika Hess found first place in the Megève / St. Gervais (25/26 January) Entry into the corresponding winners' lists.
  • On February 8th, Mateja Svet took part in the giant slalom in Vysoké Tatry , but actually the race was held in Jasná , for her maiden win and the first ever women's win for Yugoslavia (she drove two fastest times with start number 11).
  • Only one day later it was at the same place for the Corinne Schmidhauser slalom .
  • With No. 34 Liisa Savijarvi got her only victory on March 2nd in the Super-G of Furano . The other two on the podium, Winkler and Fletcher, were also surprises (they had start numbers 48 and 42)
  • Pam Fletcher's only win was on March 15th in the last downhill of the season in Vail . She set the best time in the first practice session. In her victory she wore the starting number. 30th

World Cup decisions

In the women's slalom discipline, there were 110 points each for Roswitha Steiner and Erika Hess , but the Austrian has four victories this season, Hess only two.

Nations Cup

On the evening of January 12th, the 16 world's best women held a parallel slalom (called “Invitation Parallel Slalom”) on a hill at the Munich Olympic site, which was attended by 30,000 spectators. The runners had arrived from Badgastein in the afternoon by two helicopters and several cars. Michela Figini was able to defeat the local hero Marina Kiehl in the final; In the battle for third place, Olga Charvátová prevailed against Heidi Zeller-Bähler .

Injuries, illnesses

Men's:

  • Petar Popangelow tore his spleen while training on the Hintertux Glacier.
  • Bernhard Gstrein fell on the first day of training in Val d'Isère (December 4th) on the finish slope of the Oreiller-Killy slope and had to be flown to Innsbruck University Hospital with a shoulder dislocation and fracture. He was operated on on the collateral ligament in his left knee on December 6th.
  • One day after Gstrein, Pirmin Zurbriggen , who (after three forerunners) was the first to start a training run, had a bad fall. After he had skipped the Collombin edge ("Bosse à Collombin"), he landed in a flat piece, where he suffered a bruised spine and ankle, as well as a hip injury. On the advice of his team doctor, the Swiss headed home. Due to a lack of training, Zurbriggen did not take part in the New Year's Eve descent in Schladming.
  • On December 13, the second training for the men's downhill in Val Gardena , were Alberto Ghidoni the camel hump undoing, of which he was dropped. With a shoulder dislocation and bruises to his spine, he was flown to the hospital by helicopter.
  • Gerhard Pfaffenbichler suffered a cruciate ligament rupture during downhill training in Åre on February 19.
  • Peter Müller , classified as a “top favorite” by the media, was unable to repeat the previous day's victory in the second Åre downhill run (February 22); he fell after just 54 driving seconds, breaking the ulna on his left arm. According to initial predictions, this earned him four to six weeks of plaster of paris.

Women:

  • There was a terrible fall on the downhill run in Val-d'Isère on December 12th: Innsbruck racing driver Christine Putz (born September 8th, 1966), who started with No. 30, stayed at a speed of 115 km / h shortly after the interim time was taken, hanging on a ski at the edge of the slope, hurled through the air and landed his head on the frozen track. She was in a coma, was transferred to Grenoble Hospital and later to Innsbruck University Clinic - the doctors fought for her life for 20 days. On January 1st, her condition had improved enough to have a cup of tea. (Four months after her accident, Putz was racing again, but the big comeback did not succeed due to further injuries.)
  • Christine Zangerl suffered a torn ligament in her knee while driving in on January 8 for downhill training in Bad Gastein .
  • A day later, Patricia Emonet and Debbie Armstrong were affected in the last downhill training session : The French woman suffered severe strains in the area of the fibula and ankle. The American Olympic champion in 1984, who rolled over, was diagnosed with a ruptured collateral ligament in her left knee, so she flew back to the USA for surgery.
  • On March 13th, Traudl Hächer fell during the first training run for the downhill run in Vail and suffered knee injuries. She was immediately brought to Munich and operated on March 14th.

Noteworthy and other events

The Austrian Ski Association announced through President Arnold Koller a "harder course" towards its own runners. With Andreas Rauch (women) and Dieter Bartsch (men), two new trainers were in office, and Hans Pum was promoted to trainer for the technical men. One of the main concerns of the ÖSV was "to get away from the specialty, the future belongs to the complete runner". For the first time, ideas came up not only to view the crash helmets as a very important safety accessory, but also to use them for advertising purposes (keyword “head sponsor”).

Men's:

  • As early as mid-August 1984, World Cup boss Serge Lang presented the plan at a press conference in Buenos Aires to start the 1985/86 season with three downhill runs in the South American winter sports centers Las Leñas , Bariloche (both Argentina) and Parva / Farellones (Chile). He had explained this expansion of the program by saying that it would be like a “return to the origins of the World Cup”, which was launched in Portillo in 1966.
  • Michael Mair , as the winner of the downhill run on December 7th in Val-d'Isère, only slipped into the first group due to Zurbriggen's retirement (please see article "Injuries"); He also ended a five-year lack of victory in a World Cup downhill run by the FISI men's team (most recently Herbert Plank on March 4, 1980 in Lake Louise ).
  • Anniversary victory number 80 for Ingemar Stenmark in the victory in the giant slalom in Alta Badia on December 15th.
  • For the first time, a World Cup race was held on December 31st. between the men's run in Schladming , which started at 12 noon. Harti Weirather , who had been placed in the last training thanks to rank 5, made a comeback ; he took eleventh place. 35,000 tickets were sold. - Although the same event was programmed in the same location two years later, the lack of snow and warm weather prevented this. So it has remained uniqueness until now (April 2019).
  • Before the Kitzbühel runs (January 17/18) there were discussions regarding camera movements for “ORF television”. The team captains had spoken out in favor of Michael Veith , but World Cup boss Serge Lang thwarted this because Veith would advertise his professional downhill team. So it came about that Hansi Hinterseer was hired.
  • Paul Frommelt was able to end his five-year unsuccessfulness (last victory on January 13, 1981 in the slalom in Oberstaufen ) on January 19 in the slalom on the Kitzbühel Ganslernhang.
  • Here in Kitzbühel, Toni Sailer was the first race director at the Hahnenkamm races in 1986.
  • There were unexpected placements in the men's super-G on February 3rd in Crans-Montana , because Girardelli only came in 20th; that Stenmark finished 96th was not that extraordinary, but the 11th and 15th place for the Austrians Gerhard Pfaffenbichler and Konrad Walk with the start numbers 104 and 109. - A mix-up of their start numbers by Michael Eder and Hans Stuffer , who finished seventh and ninth were, had their disqualification as a consequence (this reminded of the mix-up among the Mahre twins at the Parpan slalom on January 16, 1984, when this faux pas cost Steve the victory).
  • After eleven years of membership in the World Cup , Anton Steiner achieved his first victory in a downhill race in Morzine , with Gustav Oehrli with start no. 41 blew up a four-fold victory for the Austrian team with the other runners Peter Wirnsberger, Gerhard Pfaffenbichler and Leonhard Stock.
  • Markus Wasmeier's victory in the Super-G in Morzine on February 9th, which he achieved with No. 1 at 19 degrees below zero, was the first success for the DSV men since Christian Neureuther's slalom on the Kitzbühel Ganslernhang on January 21st 1979.
  • Atle Skårdal , who is now being looked after by Austrian trainer Kurt Hoch, came in third place (first podium for Norway since Erik Håker was also third place on January 6, 1980 in Pra-Loup ) and the no. Martin Bell ranked 28th in 6th place (and 8th and 5th in the Åre downhill runs!) The race took place at minus 18 degrees Celsius.
  • In the slalom in Åre (February 23) only five runners from Group 1 (No. 1 to 15) made it into the World Cup, with Pirmin Zurbriggen winning No. 1. The majority of the elite runners (Stenmark, Wenzel, Girardelli and Petrovic, who is already on the winning path) fell out of the race. Ultimately, only 29 of the 97 runners who had started (half of them were eliminated after the first run) were in the final ranking. With the highest starting number in terms of the top ten, a Mr Alberto Tomba landed in sixth with number 62 (his first place in the World Cup; he was 4.89 seconds behind; the Italian also came in afterwards in the Super-G in Whistler on March 16 6 (2.25 s behind winner Wasmeier)), Finn Christian Jagge with No. 55 on seven also stood out. The highest number in the ranking had Tomaž Čižman in 13th place with No. 70 - of the DSV runners it was Armin Bittner with No. 67 in 12th and Markus Wasmeier with No. 23 in 14th. Hubert Strolz took care of the ÖSV with No. 25 in 4th place for the fact that there was no "zero number".
  • In the slalom in Heavenly Valley (March 11th), which was carried out in poor piste conditions, no ÖSV runners made it into the ranking; Mader had led and Robert Zoller was sixth and Dietmar Köhlbichler tenth. The circumstances were also to blame for the fact that only 19 out of 72 participants were included in the rating. And ten days later the ÖSV men were also not placed in the last slalom of the season in Bromont on March 21 ; Hubert Strolz was first eighth, but was then disqualified. (It wasn't until December 18, 2006, the slalom in Alta Badia , that the same thing happened again, that all ÖSV runners were eliminated.)

Women:

  • At the Super-G on December 7th in Sestriere , Mateja Svet came as a surprise with start no. 51 in 3rd place; It was a disappointing result for the Austrians (Sylvia Eder in 15th place), the Swiss women (Vreni Schneider in 11th) could not be satisfied either. In addition, Christa Kinshofer , who started for the Dutch federation in 12th place, achieved World Cup points for the first time (curiosity: in the official FIS result lists she was listed under the nationality BRD , and that also in later cases .)
  • On the heavy artificial snow slope during the slalom on December 15 in Savognin , only 18 runners came into the ranking.
  • The twin sisters Małgorzata and Dorota Mogore-Tlałka, who wanted to start for France, were excluded from the Polish association due to breaches of contract. In the Super-G in Puy-Saint-Vincent on January 17th, the 15th women's race, both were allowed to start for the Fédération Française de Ski for the first time. The FIS had approved this on the basis of official confirmations of the impending grant of French citizenship. (Małgorzata scored the first World Cup points for the new association on January 19 at the giant slalom in Oberstaufen - probably because the political situation was uncertain, the two of them did not travel to the races on February 8/9 in Vysoké Tatry.)
  • Vreni Schneider was threatened with disqualification at the second giant slalom in Oberstaufen , because she had knocked down a goal on the finish slope in the second run and crossed the finish line with a flag on her upper body. When studying the film, however, no mistake was found.
  • With the victory in Saint-Gervais-les-Baines on January 26th, Roswitha Steiner advanced to the position of the most successful ÖSV lady in this discipline with six slalom victories (on rank 2 Gertrud Gabl with five victories). In this slalom Erika Hess did not finish for the first time this season, her cousin Monika Hess was able to cushion the surprisingly weak result of the SSV team with fourth place.
  • At the slalom on February 4th in Piancavallo , the first 15 runners were within a second of the first run. Charvátová managed to go from 12th to victory.
  • Most of the women traveled to the races in Vysoké Tatry (February 8/9) by FIS women’s boss Heinz Krecek with three chartered Tupolev planes from Graz - a total of six women each from France and Sweden two from the USA and Yugoslavia and all four Canadians arrived, but another 25 women did not appear. ( Ingrid Salvenmoser was absent from the Austrians ; she traveled to Vienna by car to get a visa .) As a result, there was an overcapacity of an airplane, which meant a loss of around CHF 125,000.
  • Corinna Schmidhauser's maiden victory in Vysoké Tatry had a curiosity: Her running time with No. 3 in the first run was shown on the TV screen in 40.13 s, but on the display board at the finish as 40.42 s - it said that two impulses would not have been right when she crossed the finish line - the lower time was counted, in the end the Swiss woman won with a lead of 0.16 s.
  • At the slalom in Park City (March 11th) fog and heavy snowfall led to an interruption after 29 runners in the first run; in the continuation the other starters had no chance of a good placement. At the end of the race, only 20 were classified.
  • Michela Figini remained without a win throughout the season, apart from her success in the Munich parallel slalom.

Cancellations, postponements

It was a kind of "epidemic season" because a lot of races could not be held at the planned location or date, and alternative locations had to be canceled. Sometimes there was a real guesswork about the next dates and venue and reports about fixed dates did not come true. By January 31, only 22 of 42 races had been run on the scheduled date and at the original location (for the source, see the title «The crazy ski winter ...» on the cancellations in Wengen). A little in the overall and even more so in the individual disciplines, these shifts contributed to the fact that (as usually already in mid-January) the wheat was not separated from the chaff until February.

  • The first race of the season, the men's downhill race scheduled for August 16, 1985 in Las Leñas , had to be postponed by one day due to wind storms.
  • The men's descent planned for August 24th in Bariloche was canceled due to lack of snow. Before that, the first race of the season, the men's downhill race scheduled for August 15, 1985 in Las Leñas , had been postponed by one day due to wind storms (on the new date, August 16 - with the scheduled start at 5 p.m. CET - the start was postponed by one hour ).
  • The men's slalom planned for December 1st in Courmayeur has been moved to Sestriere.
  • With regard to the men's Super-G there were start problems , because the first planned one (on December 8, 1985 in Val-d'Isère ) had to be canceled due to the insufficient amount of snow; Morzine was supposed to be the venue on February 9th, but things turned out differently because of the further races that were canceled. So Crans-Montana took over the said Super-G, Morzine, on the other hand, carried out the St. Anton descent, with which the associated combinations were made.
  • The women's descent planned in Puy-Saint-Vincent was driven on December 12th in Val-d'Isère.
  • For the time being, the women's competitions appeared on December 20 and 21 in Haus im Ennstal (downhill, giant slalom - a giant slalom was even planned on December 19 and 21), then there was initially only the cancellation of the downhill, but they had to go Canceled due to lack of snow (after that there was criticism about the cancellation; the Austrian trainer Andreas Rauch said that the conditions were "excellent"). So it happened that the first women's “giant” of the season was not presented until January 6th in Maribor , which was considered an addendum to the house and formed a combination with the second descent from Val-d'Isère. - The canceled downhill run was held in Bad Gastein on January 11th, and February 1st in Crans-Montana was named for the giant slalom .
  • Kranjska Gora came up with another men's giant slalom on January 3rd - a slalom should actually have been run on January 4th, both races as a substitute for Borovets . This slalom was added on January 21st in Parpan .
  • The Super-G of Garmisch-Partenkirchen , scheduled for January 11, 1986 and postponed to January 13 due to a snow storm , could not be driven. The organizers had tried to initially use five runners with high start numbers (in the technical jargon "star driver" - see Wikipedia article Departure ) as "snow plows", but after the first ( Michael Eder and Ivano Marzola ) they did not reached the goal, the project had to be ended. In addition, in “GA-PA” the departure planned for January 12th, for which Kitzbühel took over on January 17th, was canceled. Not enough of the program changes, due to the deadline that had become available , the men's slalom planned for January 13th in Berchtesgaden was brought forward to January 12th.
  • At the "50-year Kandahar anniversary" in St. Anton am Arlberg on 25/26. January, to which 43 former winners were invited (for source reference, please see the article in the workers' newspaper “Super-G wiehexxt” on Garmisch-Partenkirchen), only the slalom could be driven. For the time being, due to a snow storm at Kapall, a change in the program schedule was made by swapping the slalom with the downhill run and skiing on January 25th. Ultimately, the excessive amounts of snow only allowed the slalom to be carried out. The downhill should have been added on January 31 in Wengen, but even there you had to be content with at least getting the slalom off the ground.
  • There was a similar situation with a swap with the women in Megève , where instead of the departure planned for January 24th the Super-G was scheduled, but then the Super-G was not driven until January 25th and the departure was canceled.
  • The new timetable as of February 1st read in the headlines: The Lauberhorn run will be added on February 21st in Åre, where it will be combined with the Wengen slalom; the departure from St. Anton is scheduled for February 7th for Morzine . Furthermore: Super-G supplement from Garmisch on February 9th in Morzine and with the second descent there on February 8th as a combination - and these projects could be realized. Nevertheless, there was again trouble in the last races, because the men's giant slalom on March 9th in Heavenly Valley did not take place due to a strike by the runners. The active had lined up at the third goal and blocked the route. This meant that Lake Placid was commissioned with two giant slaloms (March 18-19).

Race outside the World Cup

From February 12th, the individual nations held their championships: the DSV in Todtnau (Markus Wasmeier won the Downhill, Super-G and Giant Slalom and won the “DSV Golden Ski”), the Italians in Cortina d'Ampezzo , the ÖSV in Haus im Ennstal and on Hochficht in Mühlviertel

Fatal car accident

On March 24th, the Yugoslavian runner Jože Kuralt (born September 7th, 1957) died in an accident near Sachsenburg (Carinthia) near Spittal an der Drau . Kuralt had come in the evening from an FIS race he had won in Furano and was picked up in Munich by the 22-year-old women's assistant trainer Daniel-Stane Kurak in a “Subaru”. Kurak must have fallen asleep on the journey home via Felbertauernstrasse and Lienz . There were no skid marks to be seen. The car drove up an embankment and crashed into a concrete retaining wall at full speed. Both occupants could only be rescued dead from the completely damaged vehicle.
