Peter Roth (born January 30, 1961 in Schönau am Koenigssee ) is a former German ski racer and today's trainer . He was active in the Ski World Cup from 1980 to 1994 and was one of the strongest German slalom riders for several years .

biography

Roth's sporting career began at the age of eight when he joined the ski department of WSV Königssee . He demonstrated his talent early on and won titles at the Bavarian Schoolchildren's Championships and German Youth Championships. After attending secondary school , Roth completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and then joined a sports promotion group in the Bundeswehr .

In 1980, Roth, who came from Schönau am Königssee, made the leap into the German national ski team. The first World Cup points he won on January 10, 1981 with the seventh place in the combination of Morzine . A little more than a year later, on January 15, 1982, he stood on the podium for the first time as third in the Bad Wiessee combination . In 1985, 1986 and 1987 there was another podium each. At first he was particularly successful in the combination and in the Super-G, but gradually he turned into a slalom specialist who also started in the giant slalom. After two seasons with several top 10 results, but no podium places, he won his only world cup race on August 8, 1990 with the slalom on Mount Hutt . After that, he finished third in the Kranjska Gora slalom in December 1992 on the podium. He contested the last World Cup race in February 1994.

At World Championships took Roth for the first time in 1982 in Schladming part. He achieved 10th place in the combination and 28th place in the downhill. Three years later , after a failure in the combination, he only finished 26th in the downhill. He did not take part in the World Championships in 1987 and 1989, but started in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary , where he failed in slalom, giant slalom and Super-G and therefore remained without result. In 1991 he took part again in the world championship in Saalbach-Hinterglemm , where he was ninth in slalom and 21st in giant slalom. At his last World Cup participation in Morioka in 1993 , he only started in slalom and finished eighth. He continued to have less success at the Olympic Games. 1992 in Albertville he was 16th in slalom and eliminated in giant slalom. At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , he was third in the slalom after the first round, but failed in the second run.

Between 1981 and 1994 Roth won six German championship titles in downhill, slalom and giant slalom. He was also twice runner-up in giant slalom and once runner-up in slalom. After a few underclass races in the winter of 1994/95, he announced his retirement. Today Roth works as a supervisor for the German Ski Association .
