List of Jewish places of worship in Vienna
The list of Jewish places of worship in Vienna includes all Jewish prayer houses and synagogues that have existed or exist in the course of Vienna's history. Except for the city temple , all synagogues in Vienna were destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 and in the following years of National Socialism . Today, in addition to the city temple, there are several synagogues and rooms in converted buildings on mostly restituted properties.
overview
In 1935 Vienna had 6 temples, 89 prayer houses, 55 temporary rooms, 55 language and Bible schools, 18 pastors, 73 religion teachers and 117 religious associations. With the exception of Meidling , the synagogues and prayer houses were spread across all districts of Vienna. Those districts with the largest Jewish population were Leopoldstadt (about half of the population was Jewish), from which Brigittenau was split off in 1900 , and the neighboring district of Alsergrund . Overall, in the years before 1938, Vienna had a Jewish population of around 10% or around 200,000 people with a total population of just under two million. After 1945, Vienna had around 5,000 Jewish inhabitants; in the last census in 2001 it was around 7,000, which is less than 0.5%. With a share of around 3%, Leopoldstadt is still the largest Jewish district by comparison.
Synagogues
There were around 25 synagogues in Vienna. Most were destroyed in 1938, the others so devastated and damaged that they were demolished or used for other purposes in the following years or after the end of the war. Most of the properties of former synagogues now have community or cooperative residential buildings, after they were mostly restituted to the IKG after 1945 and later sold by the IKG.
Houses and rooms of prayer
There were about 70 prayer houses in Vienna; today it's 11.
