The Zwi Perez Chajes School ( ZPC for short ) is a school in Vienna named after Rabbi Zwi Perez Chajes . The sponsor is the Association for the Preservation of the Zwi-Perez-Chajes School of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien (IKG).

Location

The school, initially just a grammar school, was located in the 1st district of Vienna , Drahtgasse 4 (near Judenplatz ) from 1919 to 1923 , and from 1923 in the 2nd district , where there was a high proportion of the Jewish population at the time. For decades, the school was housed here at Castellezgasse 35 near Augarten .

In 1935 the grammar school was relocated to an additional location in the 20th district , on Staudingergasse (Brigittenau side of the Augarten), and a Jewish elementary school was built on Castellezgasse. In 1980 the primary school could be resumed, initially in the IKG building on Seitenstettengasse in the 1st district, from 1984 on in Castellezgasse; that year the high school was reopened there.

Since 2008 the newly built school campus has been located at Simon-Wiesenthal-Gasse 3 near the Donaumarina underground station .

history

The history of the Realgymnasium goes back to the Jewish Private Realgymnasium , which opened on October 1, 1919 . In the absence of public subsidies, the school was dependent on school fees and donations. Her financial situation was always precarious. It was not possible to pay the teachers' salaries on time. The school was mainly visited by children of Jewish-Galician parents who were considered foreigners in Austria after the end of Austria-Hungary and therefore could not attend public schools. In contrast to what was common in public and Jewish schools at the time, girls and boys were taught together. There were no classes on Saturday, but classes were also held on Sundays. In addition, there were Hebrew lessons initially for five hours, later for four hours , which were culturally, literary and non-religiously oriented. The school principal was Viktor Kellner. So-called Western Jews from Bohemia , Moravia and Vienna were mainly active as teachers . Jewish subjects were taught by Eastern Jewish teachers from Galicia. In 1921 the school was granted public rights. The level of the school was rated by state school inspectors as above average.

The institution has had its current name since 1927. From 1933 onwards, the later SPÖ education politician Stella Klein-Löw taught here .

After Austria was " annexed" to the German Reich in 1938 , the school was closed on October 17, 1939, but until 1941 it served as a preparation for emigration to school-age children of Jewish faith.

From 1941 to 1945 the school building housed a collection facility created by the Nazi rulers for the transport of Jewish citizens to concentration camps .

New beginning after the Second World War

The buildings came back into the possession of the previous owners after 1945. (The district was in the Soviet sector of Vienna until 1955. ) Schools could only be resumed (primary school only) in 1980. After various structural and organizational changes, the first Matura after the Second World War was taken in 1992 .

The new building on the edge of the Prater , which began in 2006, was opened for use in 2008. Today the campus includes kindergarten, elementary school and grammar school.
