Zwi Perez Chajes (born October 13, 1876 in Brody , Galicia , Austria-Hungary ; died December 13, 1927 in Vienna ) was a rabbi .

Life

Zwi Perez Chajes was the son of a rabbi family. After studying the Talmud with his father Shelomo Chajes and in the yeshiva of his uncle Isaac Chajes and attending the rabbinical seminary in Vienna, he was ordained a rabbi in 1899 .

In 1902 he went to the Collegio Rabbinico in Florence as a professor of history and the Bible . In 1904 he applied for the post of Deputy Chief Rabbi of Brno , but was rejected by the municipality. He then taught Bible exegesis at the University of Florence from 1904 to 1912 , after which he became Chief Rabbi in Trieste .

In 1918 he accepted the position as deputy chief rabbi of the IKG Vienna . From 1921 to 1925 he took over the presidency of the Zionist Action Committee, was a member of the board of trustees of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and chairman of the League of Nations for Austria . In 1919 he founded the first Jewish secondary school, initially in the 1st district , Drahtgasse 4 (near Judenplatz ), and since 1923 in the 2nd district , Castellezgasse. He was also one of the founders of the Hebrew pedagogy in Vienna. After his death, the school in Castellezgasse was named Zwi-Perez-Chajes-Schule in 1927 and has been called that since it reopened in 1980 (since 2008 in the same district on Simon-Wiesenthal-Gasse) until today. Furthermore, a box of the B'nai B'rith is named after Zwi Peres Chajes.

Chajes was transferred to Tel Aviv in 1952.
