The Brigittenauer Tempel (also known as Kluckygasse Synagogue ) was a synagogue in the 20th district of Brigittenau ( Kluckygasse 11) in Vienna . The synagogue was built in 1899/1900 according to plans by Jakob Gartner and destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 .

history

The Brigittenau Temple Association was founded in 1873. The club's prayer room was originally located in Jägerstrasse 41. From 1875 the club moved to Webergasse 20. Between 1899 and 1900, the club's own synagogue was built according to plans by the architect Jakob Gartner, who thus realized the third temple in Vienna . The opening of the temple took place on September 20, 1900.

The synagogue was destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938. At 7:00 a.m. on November 10, 1938, the synagogue began to be looted. The silver cult objects were stolen by the Gestapo , the textiles of the synagogue destroyed. Four and a half hours later the Torah shrine was burned. The last rabbi in the Brigittenau Temple was Benjamin Murmelstein . The destroyed synagogue was later replaced by a residential building.

On November 10, 2008, a memorial plaque to the former largest synagogue in Brigittenau was unveiled on today's building.

The building in Romanesque style was built on a plot of land with three neighboring houses, so that only the main facade was visible from the outside. The outer facade was characterized by a pointed gable and a large rose window , which were surmounted by the relatively high onion domes behind . In plan, the synagogue was by three ships divided. Due to the orientation of the synagogue to the east, the main entrance was relocated to the side by placing the vestibule . The main aisle with the prayer room offered 322 male seats on the ground floor. Above this were the galleries with 225 female seats, resting on four brick pillars. The central hall structure was covered by a tent roof .
