The Ottakringer Temple , also known as Ottakringer Synagogue was a synagogue of the Jewish Community of Vienna in the 16th Viennese district Ottakring ( Hubergasse 8). It was built between 1885 and 1886 according to plans by the architect Ludwig Tischler and was completely destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 .

history

The synagogue for Ottakring, Neulerchenfeld and Hernals was built for the Israelite suburb of Ottakring before the incorporation . The property was donated by the wealthy brewery owner and benefactor Ignaz von Kuffner . After the district was incorporated, the synagogue came under the administration of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien in 1890. In 1928 the synagogue received a winter prayer school as an extension according to plans by the architect Ignaz Reiser . Despite the severe damage during the November pogroms in 1938, the synagogue survived the war as a fire ruin and could have been restored. It was torn down anyway.

building

The Ottakring Synagogue was built on a rectangular plot of land that was bordered by two houses. In its basic structure, the synagogue had three aisles , with the galleries in the side aisles being supported by brick pillars on two floors. The ceiling was made of wood. Three entrances led to the anteroom, from which one got into the main bed room with 406 male seats. There were 266 seats for women in the galleries.

From the outside, the building in the Renaissance style did not look like a religious building at first glance, but the central projecting front with its triangular gable indicated the three-aisled complex. The outer facade was also characterized by the high entrance doors and the three large arched windows above them, which were flanked by the round windows in the aisles. Only the gable was marked by religious symbols. Two tablets of the law were attached to the top of the gable , flanked by two stars of David .
