Implementation of the racing program

All 60 planned races (and the 9 combinations) could be carried out, but the venues had to be relocated and some replacement locations had to be replaced again. The first cancellations on December 1 related to the Val d' Isère races on December 6th to 8th, which were relocated to Puy-Saint-Vincent and the men's downhill run in the Isère Valley was initially scheduled for date 21 December in Bormio , which could not be held. Kitzbühel was able to help (once again) on January 11th, which means that the combined ranking with the giant slalom on December 8th only came about at that time. In addition, Sestriere jumped on December 10th and 11th for the men's races (slalom and giant slalom) scheduled in Kranjska Gora .

However, the lack of snow in almost all places messed up the racing calendar, and dates that had already been changed were also canceled. For the 8./9. December were actually planned for the Swiss town of Elm , which would have had its World Cup premiere (and so far - after the end of the 2017/18 season - was never considered), another two races were planned, but these could not be held there due to lack of snow (the warm Temperatures also did not allow the creation of an artificial snow slope), so Davos became a replacement location.

The women could on 14./15. In Madonna di Campiglio on December 31st, I did the giant slalom of Kranjska Gora and the slalom of Piancavallo , on the other hand, there were two postponements for the descent from Santa Caterina : first from December 13th to 18th, before it worked on December 21st, which also happened in the There was a connection with Altenmarkt where downhill and giant slalom (December 21/22) were canceled. This cancellation took place on December 11th, the departure could take place from the alternative location Bad Kleinkirchheim on January 9th.

World Cup decisions

There were still deleted results. For the overall World Cup, the best five results from downhill, giant slalom and slalom as well as the best three combinations counted. The best 5 results also counted for the discipline world cups. The combinations were a small exception: While there were five for men, all of which counted, there were only four for women, who of course were all counted. Furthermore, the evaluation of the super G races for the giant slalom counted. The decision in the women's giant slalom (incl. Super-G) was decided in favor of the DSV runner if Marina Kiehl and Michela Figini were tied; In total, both had the same number of wins, so the higher number of cancellation points (Kiehl 53, Figini 33) was decisive.

Pirmin Zurbriggen had to take a break from the downhill runs in Kitzbühel due to his injury and he missed ten World Cup ratings during this time. Out of a total of 35 competitions, he only made it into the points 16 times. For Marc Girardelli there are only 16 scores in the points, but with ten victories of the season (one or the other of which could have been challenged by the Swiss) he won the overall World Cup.

Before the last two races of the season (the slaloms in Park City and Heavenly Valley ) Zurbriggen had a chance of overall victory. At this point Girardelli was leading with 262 points and 29 points ahead of Zurbriggen, but "Gira" - even if he should win (which also happened) - due to the rule with the deleted results, could not get a point, while the Swiss would have scored any point could (he should have got 30 points, because with 29 and thus equal points, the higher number of cancellation points would have spoken for Girardelli). - But since Zurbriggen was eliminated in the first round at the first attempt (on March 20) and thus remained without points, the already more theoretical chance for him, who was (especially at this point in time) considered a less than excellent slalom driver, was already gone. The opponent starting for Luxembourg was not in the lead after the first run, but in the end he was 2.14 seconds ahead of the second Rok Petrovič. Rank 5 in the final slalom on March 23rd brought Zurbriggen only an improvement of 11 points from 233 to the final 244.

The “rule of 30” in technical disciplines

This regulation, which was introduced step by step (with first application in the “World Series”), provided that in the slalom and giant slalom only the first 30 after the 1st run should start for the second run; for the World Cup, the first 15 of the classification had to be counted. A major reason for this change was to keep the tension going until the end of the race (especially for the TV audience). The starting order was controversial because it should start with 30th place. From 1985/86 this rule (with various modifications) was fully applied to women.

The first decisive measure for the World Cup took place in the women's giant slalom in Lake Placid on March 13, 1985. For the men, the innovation should already have been used in the giant slalom in Aspen on March 10, but the competition was after the appropriate driver and supervisor -Protests (especially clear words from Ingemar Stenmark, who threatened to end his career) according to the previous regulations. There was then a vote on whether the rating of this race should be revoked, which even spoke out 2: 1 in favor of non-recognition, but World Cup inventor Serge Lang found this vote "not convincing" and said that " the scandal was big enough anyway. " The media criticized the fact that it was not a good idea to bring this test to the table in the decisive final phase of the World Cup.

Premier victories

Robert Erlacher and Thomas Bürgler (who had already attracted attention in the “World Series”) recorded their first victories. Ultimately, it was Michel Vion who, with the combination win in Wengen , stopped the French's lack of victory from and including the 1973/74 season.

Zoë Haas took her victory in Puy-Saint-Vincent (December 6th) with start no. 37 and caught Marina Kiehl, who was the favorite from training. Also Traudl Hächer 's victory in the Super-G of Davos (December 8) was treated with a high start number, u. between 54, reached. At the same location, Christelle Guignard also achieved her first victory one day later in the slalom (although her start number 22 was again outside of the «elite drivers»). With Dorota Tlałka there was the fifth winner in the fifth race of the season, the slalom in Madonna di Campiglio. In addition, it was the first World Cup success for her and the Polish women's team (the men had a record since February 19, 1972 in Banff with the slalom victory of Andrzej Bachleda ). Also Katharina Gutensohn got its first win (March 2 in the downhill in Vail ), where she came into the standings as the only World Championship medal winners because both Michela Figini had fallen and Ariane Ehrat what they, the last to the first starting group ( No. 15) had already known.

Injuries

  • Urs Räber suffered a concussion on November 27 in a fall during downhill training for the Swiss team near Davos and was taken to hospital by helicopter.
  • During the first part of the training session on December 13th for the downhill run in Val Gardena , Erwin Resch fell and suffered a muscle tear in his right thigh. One day later, Gerhard Pfaffenbichler , who was only intended as a forerunner, suffered a broken collarbone in a fall.
  • The injury that caused a stir not only in Switzerland, but in all countries more familiar with alpine skiing, concerned Pirmin Zurbriggen, which he suffered on the downhill runs in Kitzbühel (keyword: “The knee of the nation”). After a "quick healing" he was able to take part in the world championships (and win two gold and one silver), but this long failure cost him the overall World Cup (and perhaps also a discipline classification - please see the description of the "World Cup decisions" in detail) »).
  • In the course of time for the descent in Bad Kleinkirchheim, Veronika Vitzthum suffered a lateral and cruciate ligament tear in her left knee.
  • Sieglinde Winkler broke two thoracic vertebrae on the descent from Megève (January 20); she was transferred to the Innsbruck University Hospital. as well as a reference to the source on the subject of "cancellations and postponements" with the title "Eder missed third place by hundredth of a second" in "Arbeiterzeitung" on January 21, 1985

Worth mentioning

  • The season planning of the ÖSV for the men's team was, in view of the long dry spell of 14 years without overall World Cup victory, Anton Steiner and Hans Enn .
  • What Karl Kahr had already proposed in January 1978 was renewed - with a modified and expanded classification - by the Salzburg ski manufacturer Toni Arnsteiner with regard to a categorization of ski racing: starting with a “Formula 4” for various children's and youth races, “Formula 3” with FIS races, "Formula 2" with European Cup races and "Formula 1" with Super World Cup races and a maximum of 50 participants each. He also called for more selective (slower) downhill slopes as well as faster processing for the giant slalom (a qualifying competition the day before and then only one final round).
  • Elisabeth Kirchler contested the descent in Puy-Saint-Vincent with a plaster cuff on her left hand and came fourth.
  • The fact that Franz Klammer (and also other stars, namely Weirather, Stock, Resch, Cathomen, Räber, Brooker, Johnson - these were practically all downers) should become “professionals” immediately after the 1984/85 season was already announced in December rumored and not specifically denied.
  • All four combination decisions for the women went to Switzerland.
  • After five years without a podium for Austria's women in giant slalom, Elisabeth Kirchler was able to interrupt this dubious race on January 21st with rank 2 in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains (and she also won the world championship silver medal in giant slalom, of all places ).

Resignations

Several runners, some of them known as "greats", said goodbye: Caroline Attia , Irene Epple , Ursula Konzett , Cindy Nelson , Jana Gantnerová-Šoltýsová or Franz Klammer , Jure Franko , Peter Lüscher , Jacques Lüthy , Boris Strel , Michael Veith , Michel Vion .

Race outside the World Cup

On 25/26 November the traditional “World Series” started in San Sicario with one slalom each for women and men, whereby in the second run (as a foretaste of the rule changes planned for next season) only the first 30 of the first run were allowed. In the women's category (90 participants; 17 in the ranking), Maria Epple von Erika Hess, Paoletta Magoni, Eva Twardokens , Perrine Pelen won; the Austrians Monika Maierhofer and Ulrike Maier took 10th place ex aequo - Oswald Tötsch was the men's winner ahead of Bojan Križaj, Petar Popangelow, Rok Petrovič , Stig Strand , Peter Namberger and Franz Gruber. 69 had entered the race, after the "30-cut" 18 came into the classification.

It continued on November 27th with a women's giant slalom in San Sicario, won by Blanca Fernández Ochoa in front of Maria Kiehl, Mateja Svet , Daniela Zini and Anita Wachter ; behind Maria Epple in 7th place, Erika Hess and Zoë Haas were the best of the SSV team eighth and ninth. Ultimately, the men drove a giant slalom in Puy-Saint-Vincent on November 28; it won Thomas Bürgler before Robert Erlacher , and Pirmin Zurbriggen; the best Austrian was Hubert Strolz in 14th place; Of the 54 runners who started, 30 were allowed to take part in the second round due to the new regulations.
