Andreas "Andy" Wenzel (born March 18, 1958 in Straubing , Bavaria ) is a former Liechtenstein ski racer .

biography

Together with his sister Hanni , he was active in the Ski World Cup in the late 1970s and 1980s . He won the gold medal in giant slalom at the European Junior Championships in Mayrhofen in 1975 . At the World Ski Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1978 , the all-rounder won the combination and the silver medal in the giant slalom . In the combination at the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid , he finished second. This competition was only held as a world championship, so there was no Olympic medal here. However, he won silver in the giant slalom, where he led in front of Hans Enn and Ingemar Stenmark in the two-day competition after the first run . At the Olympic Games in Sarajevo in 1984 , he was able to win the bronze medal in the giant slalom. This time he also lost a rank, because he was only 0.10 s behind Max Julen after the first run , but was still overtaken by Jure Franko .

In the Ski World Cup he won a total of 14 times, 6 of them in the combination. He won the overall World Cup in 1980 with 204 points ahead of Ingemar Stenmark (200) and Phil Mahre (132). Since sister Hanni also won the overall World Cup (again after 1977/78), it was the first time that a pair of siblings took possession of this trophy in the same season.

After retiring, he became racing director of the Atomic ski company in early October 1988 . In 2006, Wenzel received the Golden Laurel Leaf , Liechtenstein's highest sporting award. His sister had received this award in 2004. Since 2007 he has been President of the Liechtenstein Ski Association (LSV).

His niece Tina Weirather is also a successful ski racer.
