The 1978/79 season of the Alpine Ski World Cup organized by the FIS began on December 9, 1978 in Schladming (men) and Piancavallo (women) and ended on March 20, 1979 in Furano . For the men, 29 races were held (9  downhill runs , 10  giant slaloms , 10  slaloms ). For women there were 22 races (7 downhill runs, 7 giant slaloms, 8 slaloms). There were also four combination ratings. The end of the season was a women's parallel slalom on March 20, which only counted for the Nations Cup . The men's parallel slalom was canceled due to timing reasons.

This season was an interim year without a World Cup or Olympic Winter Games .

Season course

Point system

Basically, the best three results in each discipline counted for the overall World Cup. No separate "small crystal ball" was awarded for the combined ranking, but here too the best three results were included in the overall World Cup. For the other discipline evaluations, the best 5 results were included in the evaluation.

For the first and only time, a special point system was used for the last races of the season (with the exception of combination ratings), according to which the first 25 of the classification were awarded World Cup points (victory: 25 points; rank 25: 1 point). This affected the last three races of all disciplines for women and the last three slaloms, giant slaloms and two downhill runs for men.

Premier victories

In addition to that of the unfortunate Leonardo David there were three ways Peter Lüscher and doubly Peter Wirnsberger , furthermore also Toni Bürgler , Martial Donnet (with No. 24 outside the elite runners;. At all only the fourth slalom victory for the Swiss men, most recently it was Edmund Bruggmann at 17 February 1969 in Kranjska Gora ), Paul Frommelt (as the first slalom winner for the Liechtenstein men) and Anton Steiner . In the women's category, it was Abigail Fisher , Maria Rosa Quario and last year's world champion Lea Sölkner (along with serial winner Christa Kinshofer, who was also mentioned elsewhere) .

World Cup decisions

The World Cup Committee had planned to divide the runners into different categories (World Cup, European and NorAm Cup, other FIS races) from the 1978/79 season and to introduce a promotion and relegation regulation between these groups.

Men:
Ingemar Stenmark managed to win all ten giant slaloms of the season. But he failed because of the prank results regulation (with 260 "reduction points"!) To win the overall World Cup a fourth time; on the contrary, he, who showed the maximum number of points of 75 each from the slalom and giant slalom, was "only" fifth. This number of deleted points was higher than Lüscher's total number of 186, but even if both had received bonuses for all their races according to the current system (with the "inflation points" at the end of the season), the Swiss would have "only" achieved 304 and the Swede 410 points.

Women:
Annemarie Moser-Pröll was able to secure the overall World Cup for the sixth and last time (in an exciting final in Furano ), although there were postponements and program changes there due to various freak weather conditions. Only the final giant slalom on March 19 brought victory for the Austrian, because before this race Hanni Wenzel was ahead with 240 to 220 points thanks to her second place in the slalom on March 18 (immediately before Moser-Pröll). Due to the deletion results, Wenzel would only have got 3 points for a victory, while the Austrian had a chance of 24 points, of which she - with second place - achieved 23. After the first round, Moser was in 6th place, Wenzel in 4th place - this meant that Wenzel would have remained without a point, but Moser could only have made up 19 points. But while Moser still advanced to 2nd place, Wenzel fell back to 5th place.

Special events

The season was overshadowed by the fatal fall of Leonardo David on the pre-Olympic Downhill on March 3, 1979 in Lake Placid .

The following messages were already available before the season:

  • Franz Klammer announced on April 29th that he would continue to compete in races, although he left it open which ski brand he would choose. Two months later, the news came that his ski company was not seeking a contract extension due to a lack of trust and thanked him for the many years of cooperation.
  • The news came from professional world champion Andre Arnold that he would like to compete with the entire ÖSV World Cup team in order to answer the question of whether professionals are stronger than amateurs.
  • Ingemar Stenmark, who arrived at the beginning of September 1978 with the Swedish team for training in the South Tyrolean Schnalstal, announced in a TV interview that “he still needs to improve his technique” and that he will not continue to descend. In addition, his trainer Hermann Nogler added that this discipline "requires special preparation, but Stenmark does not want to lose his strength"

Other reports were:

  • The German Heinz Krecek remained the controller of the ski equipment, but from the summer of 1978 he was employed full-time at the FIS.
  • Last year's overall winner Lise-Marie Morerod was seriously injured as a passenger in a car on the way to her parents in Les Diablerets in an accident on a back road near Vernayaz on July 24, 1978 and was out of the season.
  • The Swedish men's team reported that it would enter the World Cup with an enlarged team.
  • As an ex-aequo third in the slalom in Piancavallo (December 10th) Tamara McKinney stood on a World Cup podium for the first time.
  • On January 6, 1979, Ken Read won the Morzine descent with a 0.45 second lead over his compatriot Steve Podborski , but this success was denied because his racing suit - after an inspection in Bern - was only half as breathable as in the regulations required; thus Podborski was awarded the victory and everyone else in the classification moved up one rank.
  • In Jasná , where Ingemar Stenmark celebrated his first big victory at the Junior European Championships in 1974, he distanced himself from his competitors in the giant slalom on February 4th with a record lead of 4 that had never been seen in the World Cup (and which still exists today, summer 20198) , 06 s on Bojan Križaj ; Already clearly ahead after the first run, he almost doubled this lead in the second run. In addition, with 13 wins this season, he improved his record two years ago (10) and also trumped Annemarie Moser-Pröll's eleven from the 1972/73 season .
  • However, the Austrian runners Leonhard Stock and Gerhard Jäger experienced an unpleasant surprise in Jasná , whose skis had been stolen in the hotel basement between the two runs.
  • Marie-Theres Nadig also set an unsurpassed lead in the giant slalom in the giant slalom , who initially did not receive the necessary attention in the final race on March 19 in Furano in view of the duel for the overall World Cup decision; the Flumserin was 5.20 s faster than Moser-Pröll, although in the first run it was 0.26 s behind the fourth-placed Wenzel with 1: 23.61.
  • Christa Kinshofer , who had not yet won , was the first woman to win five giant slaloms in a row in the World Cup; previously there had been series in the women's downhill run by Moser-Pröll (eleven across seasons, eight of them in the 1972/73 season) and by Christa Zechmeister with four slalom victories in a row in 1973/74. (The fact that Kinshofer was only 12th in Furano, 8.34 s behind, was at most a blemish. Moser's second place also hid the poor placements of the other ÖSV women with ranks 17, 19 and 21 for Monika Kaserer, Edith Peter and Lea Sölkner.)
  • After the end of the season, the ÖSV women had exactly 100 victories (50 in the downhill, 29 in the giant slalom, 6 in the combination and - including the parallel slalom at the end of the season 1974/75 - 15 in the slalom); Annemarie Moser-Pröll had the privilege of completing this "hundred" with her downhill victory on March 2nd in Lake Placid . - Including the men, there were 178 victories for the ÖSV. However, not a single slalom podium was achieved; best place was 4th place for Christian Orlainsky (this with no. 49) on February 5th in Jasná. and by Franz Gruber on February 7th in Oslo.
  • Erik Håker recorded the first Norwegian World Cup downhill victory (and at the same time his only one) in Val Gardena on December 17th , although it happened with difficulty. The timekeeping had failed, and although his victory was certain, he had to race a second time due to a decision of the jury.
  • The regulation with points for the first 25 of the classification also overwhelmed the computers; For example, both the men in Jasná and the women in Pfronten partially failed to use these systems, in Pfronten the combination results had to be determined manually.

Injuries

Serious injury to world champion Maria Epple in a fall in the giant slalom in Piancavallo on December 12th: cruciate ligament, collateral ligament and capsule tear

Resignations

Olympic champion Heini Hemmi and his team mate and fourth in the Olympic downhill run Philippe Roux , as well as Renato Antonioli as well as Patricia Emonet and Brigitte Totschnig .

Race outside the World Cup

On December 14th, a men's parallel slalom was held in Madonna di Campiglio, which was only part of the Nations Cup, with Ingemar Stenmark winning ahead of Mauro Bernadi, Karl Trojer and Christian Neureuther.
