history

Surname

The village used to be called Sankt Jossen (to Jodocus ) and in 1317 we find “Schirun”, 1400 “Scherun”, 1410 “St. Josen in Schiruns "and from 1430 always" Schruns ".

There are different theories for the origin of the name "Schruns":

  • The name "Schruns" comes from Rhaeto-Romanic and is said to be derived from "Äscherun", which would mean "giant maple".
  • Or from the Latin "Aceronis" - "Near the maples".
  • Another interpretation arises from a derivation from the Latin “Serum” (in Rhaeto-Romanic “Scherun”) for “dairy” or “milk processing”.

15th century

Around 1420 Schruns came to Austria with the rest of the Montafon . For a long time it was under the parish of Bartholomäberg . The Litz formed the border against this much larger community in terms of area. The Ill, which had taken a significantly different course before the flood disaster of 1762, delimited Schruns from Tschagguns. In documents from 1482 and 1484 the church “St. Josen zu Schruns "called.

16th and 17th centuries

In 1579 the Schruns church separated from the mother parish of Sankt Bartholomäberg and Schruns became its own parish. The whole area of the Ausserlitz stayed with Bartholomäberg for longer.

In 1622 Schruns was sacked by troops from the Prättigau during the Thirty Years' War , who came over the Schlappiner Joch . Before that, the opposite had happened when Habsburg troops sacked the Prättigau in 1621 .

The plague killed many people in 1591 and 1629. In the severe winter of 1689 there were four dead on the Stiefen . In 1682 the parish church burned down. Since this happened in the middle of the day, the surrounding houses could be saved. In 1696 the craftsmen's guild of the valley was founded in Schruns and Ulrich Marent was appointed as the first guild master.

18th century

On March 1, 1752, Empress Maria Theresia granted the Montafon residents the privilege of holding two cattle markets a year in Schruns (April 2 and September 22). The Montafon brown cattle were traded on these markets until they were discontinued in 1999. In 1754 Schruns already had 1230 inhabitants.

In 1762 the rivers Ill and Litz devastated the fields of the village during a great flood. Twenty houses fell victim to the floods. After long efforts, Schruns received its own court in 1775 and at the same time the right to hold general markets.

Between 1796 and 1799 Schruns was in distress. Local riflemen under Landammann Batlogg took part in battles against Napoleon's troops near Feldkirch and the Schlappiner Joch . In 1800 the place was occupied.

19th century

From 1805 to 1814 the Montafon belonged to Bavaria . At this time the valley road was built through Schruns. The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria ( Freiburg im Breisgau ). Schruns has belonged to the Austrian state of Vorarlberg since it was founded in 1861.

20th century

Construction of the "Litzdamm" (1911)

On June 14th and 15th, 1910, a flood of the Ill caused great damage in the municipality. As a result, the construction of the Litz dam began in 1911.

In 1925/1926 the most famous long-term guest stayed in Schruns: Ernest Hemingway . During this time he completed his book " Fiesta ", with which he achieved his literary breakthrough. His Schrunser time was also reflected in the novels " Snow on Kilimanjaro " and " Paris - A Festival for Life ". During his stay in Montafon, he lived in the Hotel Taube in Schruns and also in the Madlenerhaus on the Bielerhöhe (in the Silvretta).

In 1924 Schruns applied for a market survey and a coat of arms. A big celebration took place in Schruns on July 1, 1928, after the parish had already been officially elevated to a market parish by the state parliament under Ferdinand Redler on October 21, 1927 .

From 1938 to 1945 Schruns belonged to the German Reich . When French troops marched into the Montafon on May 4, 1945, the valley was spared from fighting. Local resistance groups had already taken over the supervision and disarmed the soldiers of the Wehrmacht . Schruns was then part of the French zone of occupation in Austria from 1945 to 1955 .

Since the Second World War , Schruns experienced a huge growth in economy and tourism. In 1946 a spark burned again in Schruns for the first time after the war - Otto Borger was the spark master .

The Montafon Ski Club was founded in November 1949. It formed an amalgamation of all winter sports clubs in the valley and the organizational requirements for large, international sporting events. With the gold key races from 1963 to 1983, Schruns became known as the venue for World Cup races in the Alpine Ski World Cup .

In 1950, Schruns opened a secondary school for the Montafon, today Schruns-Dorf secondary school.

In January 1954, during this snowy winter, a few hundred slabs of snow, avalanches and snow slides came loose within just three days, claiming 112 deaths in Vorarlberg . On January 11, 1954, an avalanche of dust thundered from the Monteneu (above Bartholomäberg) down to the Litztobel and left a trail of devastation. Together with a second avalanche on the same day, 23 people died under the snow masses in the two communities of Bartholomäberg and Schruns. In autumn 2004 a memorial stone was placed on the Montjola for the victims. In Schruns cemetery, a plaque on the cemetery chapel with the names of all the dead reminds of the accidents.

In 1977 the construction of the secondary school Schruns-Grüt began, the school was opened in 1979. In 1995 an additional kindergarten "Auf der Litz" was built. The montafon-wide first all-day kindergarten right next to it has supplemented the offer since 2017. In 2005 the association "Open Youth Work Montafon" was founded and the JAM youth club was set up.

The Alpenbad Montafon Schruns / Tschagguns was built in 1971, the artificial ice rink at the Alpenbad in 1976. the new soccer field on Wagenweg follows in 1995.

The Nursing Association in Outside Montafon started operations on July 1, 1986, while in 1994 the Maria Rast Hospital was taken over by the State of Vorarlberg and the St. Josefsheim Hospital was converted into a nursing home for the chronically ill in 1995. In 1994 the sanatorium Dr. Christian Schenk at the L 188, where trauma surgery is carried out. With the start of construction for the new Gesundheits- u. Population development in Schruns
Source: Statistics Austria

In the years from 1981 to 1991 the migration balance was already negative, but could be offset by the birth balance. From 1991 to 2001, emigration increased so rapidly that the population decreased. In the next ten years the migration balance was almost balanced, but the birth balance was negative for the first time.

coat of arms

The award of the coat of arms to the market town of Schruns took place with the handover of the coat of arms certificate on December 10, 1927 by the Vorarlberg state government .

Schruns

The coat of arms shows a shield divided by gold over blue: on top of the gold is a jumping black bull. At the bottom of the blue are two crossed golden keys in front of a green mountain of three with the sun rising behind them.

The bull is a reminder of the upswing through cattle breeding and cattle markets. The mountain with the rising sun indicates tourism. The keys show that they belong to the Montafon valley : The Montafon coat of arms with the symbol of the crossed keys is taken from the papal coat of arms, has been in use since the early 15th century and is based on a curious story:

During the Appenzell War (1405–1408) the people of Montafon organized themselves into a “country” and used two crossed keys derived from the St. Peter farm (near Bludenz) as symbols in the coat of arms . This coat of arms was later arbitrarily redesigned to become the papal coat of arms by adding a triple papal crown to the coat of arms . This was justified by the fact that Pope John XXIII. on the way to the Council of Constance was carried in a sedan chair from the Klostertal over the Kristberg to the Montafon in order to escape the plague and then given them the right. In 1700 Pope Innocent XII allowed the Montafon people officially take control of this coat of arms.

  • Catholic parish church Schruns hl. Jodok: In the middle of Schruns on the church square is the parish church of St. Jodok , which was built between 1865 and 1867. Inside, it surprises with its rich furnishings with pictures and statues and today it is one of those churches that have become rare and that are still completely uniform in the Nazarene style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With the decision of the Bishop of Feldkirch on December 10, 2019, the church was elevated to the status of a minster on March 8, 2020 as the first Austrian parish church.
  • Litzkapelle : At the beginning of the village center of Schruns, at the junction to Bartholomäberg , there has been a graceful little pilgrimage chapel for more than 300 years . According to legend, there used to be a fertile pear tree here. When it withered unexpectedly, the owner built this little church in its place in 1688. In the center of the chapel is a statue of the Madonna, venerated by many people, on the Renaissance altar. The sculptures on the altar were made by the Tyrolean sculptor Melchior Lechleitner . In 1981 the chapel was restored by Konrad Honold , and it turned out that the ceiling painting " Immaculata " (Latin: "The Immaculate") was made in 1886 by the Schruns painter Jakob Bertle . The interior of the chapel is lovingly decorated by neighbors and the rosary is still said every week in the church. On the outer facade, the coat of arms of the Counts of Starhemberg, carved in marble, reminds of Ernst Rüdiger Camillo Maria Starhemberg , who suffered cardiac death in this chapel at the age of 57 in 1956.
  • Gauenstein Capuchin Monastery: The Gauenstein Monastery is one of the most beautiful Capuchin settlements in Vorarlberg. The current building including the garden is a little above the valley floor in the forest. Since the beginning of the 18th century there has been a hermitage with one or two forest brothers. In 1701 Brother Kaspar Ubanizi of the Third Order of St. Franziskus , born in Salzburg, moved to the Montafon and built a hermitage at the height of the Gau. He later moved away, but had successors. In 1709 the hermitage was renewed and a chapel was built. The most important hermit was Brother Dismas; he built his own cell here and laid out a garden. The little church was consecrated on July 25, 1721 by the Prince-Bishop of Chur in honor of Our Lady of Sorrows. The "Franciscan-run hermitage [...] was forcibly abolished under Emperor Josef II. (1780-1790)." Brother Dismas now bequeathed the hermitage and the little church to the Capuchins, but the last one died in 1821. The Schruns parish obtained this Ownership and sold the hermitage to the siblings Johann Fidel Tschol and Maria Anna Tschol. They remained without descendants and so Gauenstein was bequeathed to the Capuchins again on September 10, 1844. The old chapel was almost completely demolished and replaced by a new one. Even at the beginning of this monastery, the Capuchins made a passable road, until then only one way led to this hill above Schruns. On July 14, 1851, the church was consecrated by Georg Prünster, auxiliary bishop in Brixen , in honor of Our Lady of Sorrows . In 1929 there was an extension (guest house), and in 1995/96 the church was completely renovated.
  • Franziskus Chapel: In 2001 the small mountain chapel was built on the Rieder Maisäß. It is consecrated to Saint Francis. In 2011 she received five small-format windows from the Bavarian court glass painting Gustav van Treeck in Munich.
  • Montafoner Heimatmuseum Schruns : In 1906 a group of locals interested in local history began to collect rare animals, plants and minerals in the Montafon and then to exhibit them. Under the direction of the Schruns headmaster Johann Wiederin, the now extensive collection was supplemented by old furniture, pictures and works of art. A suitable location for the collection was found in the Frühmesshaus in Silvrettastraße, and so the “Montafon Heritage Protection Museum” was ceremoniously opened in Schruns on June 12, 1921. In 1978 the museum moved to the church square in Schruns in an old Montafon estate house (in the gable, referenced 1710; Rhaeto-Romanic, building; formerly the seat of the mountain judges), which was renovated and supplemented by a new building. This optimal combination offers the possibility in the two differently equipped buildings to optimally present the exhibits according to current knowledge. It houses cultural assets from all over the valley and provides information about the way of life of the Montafon people. While showcases are set up in the new building, the old building offers a tour of the living culture and working world of the Montafon: farm equipment collection, folklore and art history, works of art from the Gothic and Baroque periods (including former high altar figures from the Schruns parish church by Josef Klemens Witwer from Imst , around 1790). A small room is set up as a school class with the obligatory teacher's desk, the harmonium and the fixed wooden benches. Here eight school levels were taught simultaneously. Josef Zurkirchen's “Montafon Archive”, which is also housed here, is accessible for study purposes by prior arrangement. The Montafon Heimatschutzverein is the sponsor of the Heimatmuseum and the owner of the collection. In November 2011 there was a public survey in Schruns about a planned new museum building and the proposal by the architects Marte / Marte in reduced concrete was rejected by the population.
  • Memorial for Mayor Batlogg: Johann Josef Batlogg (1751–1800) from Montafon was Mayor , judge and national defender. From 1794, the armed conflicts brought about by the French Revolution were also felt in Vorarlberg. In 1799 Batlogg successfully defended Vorarlberg and the Montafon against the French who were pushing over from Switzerland. In the winter of 1907, this monument was erected using natural stones and a relief made of Carrara marble based on a design by the artist Jakob Bertle . In Schruns, the Batloggstrasse and the Batlogghalle (today the “Kulturbühne”) are named after the freedom fighter.
  • Ernest Hemingway monument: Ernest Hemingway spent two winters in the Montafon in 1925/26. He had worked on his first novel “ Fiesta ” in Schruns , and the American writer also refers to his stays in Vorarlberg in “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”. The approximately two meter high monument with the bronze Hemingway bust was unveiled at the end of March 2008.
  • Litzpromenade: The Litzpromenade with the linden avenue leads from Schruns along the Litz to Tschagguns. The Litzdamm was built in 1912 and thus the settlement area developed here.
  • Fitsch-Haus: The “Fitsch-Haus” is located on the opposite side of the street from the entrance to the Litz Chapel. There is a beautiful room and an old vaulted cellar. In the past, wine from the Italian Valtellina was delivered to wealthy houses in Germany. The route led from the Valtellina via the " Via Valtellina " through Schruns and the wine was temporarily stored in this house. For several centuries the Italian wine was transported on mule tracks on horseback from the Valtellina (Italian: “Valtellina”) through the Puschlav valley and the Engadine to Davos , Klosters and further over the Schlappiner Joch into the Montafon.
The Maklott House
  • Maklott-Haus: The Maklott-Haus in the center of Schruns, with the striking, pink Art Nouveau facade, is now in the third generation of the Maklott family. The builder of the house was the last mine operator in the Montafon and was very wealthy for the time. The Mayer family was quite progressive from an early age and Wilhelm Mayer operated the first power plant on the Litz, built in 1897, which supplied the surrounding towns and the railroad with electricity.
  • Loden factory Schruns: On the side of the Litz facing away from the town center you can see the building of the loden factory founded in 1886. The owners were already at the world exhibition in Paris with their products. In 1906/07 the owner Heinrich Mayer installed a modern steam and shower bath in the basement of the loden factory, which was designed by Hanns Kornberger , a well-known Vorarlberg Art Nouveau architect (also the planner of the Maklott building).
During the three years of its existence, it was mainly the “strangers” and less the locals who have been handed down as guests, because the Schruns saw the bath as a “breeding ground for vice”. The loden factory was badly damaged by the floods of the Litz in 1910. Otto Borger , together with his brothers Karl and Hugo, took over the Schrunser loden factory from his father Max in 1934 and managed it until it was closed around 40 years later.
  • Hotel Krone: West of the Litz is the hotel "Krone" of the Mayer family. In the "Krone" itself there are wooden rooms made by the Silbertaler David Bitschnau, who was also at the world exhibition in the 19th century and made woodwork in Herrenchiemsee Palace .

economy

Until the beginning of the last century, the people of Schruns lived mainly from agriculture, cattle breeding, trade and commerce. And at that time many earned their bread as cabbage cutters, bricklayers or plasterers abroad, while women and mothers looked after those who stayed at home.

By 1900 Schruns already had around 350 inhabited houses and by the First World War this number increased significantly. In 1910 Schruns reached the number of around 1,600 inhabitants that it had already had around 1850.

In 2003 there were 139 commercial enterprises with 1523 employees and 196 apprentices. There were workers subject to wage tax in 1861. Tourism and tourism play an important role in this.

Companies

  • The Montafonerbahn AG was founded in Schruns in 1904.
  • The savings and loan bank for Montafon in Schruns was founded in 1892 (today Raiffeisen Bank).
  • The company Jäger Bau was founded in 1922 by DI Karl Jäger u. has its headquarters in Schruns until 2021.

tourism

Around 1870 the first holiday guests came to Schruns with the beginning of summer tourism, and with it began its development as a tourist destination. The traffic and beautification association founded in 1898 took over the promotion of this new branch of business. Gradually a large number of cozy inns and the first hotels were built.

The area around Schruns today offers ski areas from 700 to 2400 meters, 62 lifts and cable cars in Schruns-Tschagguns and in the vicinity with 200 km of groomed slopes.

In the 2001/02 tourism year there were a total of 362,888 overnight stays, of which 222,318 were in winter and 140,570 in summer, which corresponds to a ratio of 61.3% to 38.7%. The share of commercial beds was 50.9%, that of private beds 45.2% u. Others accounted for 3.9%. In the summer of 2001/02 Schruns had 2,921 beds a. over 2,922 beds in winter.

In the tourism year 2017/18, on the other hand, there were a total of 311,707 overnight stays in Schruns, 192,085 of them in winter and 119,622 in summer, which this time corresponds to a ratio of 61.6% to 38.4%. The share of commercial beds was 57.8%, that of private beds 36.6% and the like. Others accounted for 5.6%. In 2017/18 Schruns had 3,061 beds in summer and 3,101 beds in winter.

The winter to summer ratio thus remained almost exactly constant at 62% to 38%, while the share of private beds fell significantly from 45% to 37%. Commercial beds almost completely offset this decline with an increase from 50.9% to 57.8%.

  • Kapell: The municipality is home to one of the largest skiing and hiking areas in the Montafon, the Silvretta Montafon former Hochjoch (or Kapell, from "Kapellalpe"). As early as 1913 there were plans to build a railway on the Schrunser Kapell. In autumn 1945 the two Schruns Josef Thöni and Albert Zudrell as well as the alpine writer Walther Flaig proposed the construction of a cable car from Schruns over the Kapellalpe to the Kreuzjoch summit at an altitude of 2,395 meters. In 1948 the Montafoner Bergbahn GmbH was founded. In 1950 the "Vier Jahreszeitenbahn" was able to open up to the chapel and in 1951 the second section (Kropfen-Kapellalpe) was put into operation. Initially this was a chair lift and in 1966 a gondola lift was built up to the chapel. The Grasjoch area has also been opened up since 1980 and further opportunities for ascent were created with the Zamangbahn (built in 1981) from Schruns and the Kapellbahn from Silbertal . With the merger of the two ski lift companies Montafoner Hochjochbahnen GmbH from Schruns and the Silvretta Nova Bergbahnen GmbH from St. Gallenkirch, the largest ski area in Vorarlberg was created in 2011 with the Silvretta Montafon.
  • Former Montafon health resort: In 1950, the Montafon health resort on the Litz promenade was opened in Schruns by the Montafon doctor Edwin Albrich . He initially worked in the “Maria Rast” hospital in Schruns and recognized the healing properties of the high mountain climate in connection with exercise in nature. Water, thermal and bath cures as well as "electrotherapy" were offered. At that time there were not enough hotels available in Schruns, as they either served the French occupation or did not have the desired quality - so the spa hotel was opened in 1951. Many famous politicians, personalities and crowned heads came and went there in the following years. The former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Herbert von Karajan were also here to visit. The spa hotel was demolished in autumn 2016 and a chalet resort is currently being built in its place.
  • Hotel Löwen and Haus des Gastes: In 1974 the Löwen Hotel and the community-owned "Haus des Gastes" opened. After a major fire on February 23, 1978, the hotel had to be rebuilt and reopened in the same year. After a referendum in 2017 , the sale of the "Haus des Gastes" to the Liebherr Group as the operator of the Hotel Löwen was fixed. It is planned to expand the hotel with a seminar center.
  • Former gold key races : Between 1963 and 1983, national and international interest focused on Schruns as a winter sports center.

traffic

Station in Schruns
  • Schruns station : Schruns is the terminus of the Bludenz – Schruns railway line . In 2001 the station building was redesigned with the architect Hans Hohenfellner . The east-facing ground floor extension from the 1930s was removed and replaced by a transparent structure for the dispatcher and waiting room.
  • The Montafonerbahn AG was able to take over the power station on the Litz, originally built privately by Wilhelm Mayer in 1897, and thus supply Schruns and the railway with electricity: in 1905, the Bludenz-Schruns line was one of the first electrically operated standard gauge local railways operated by the Austro-Hungarian Empire Monarchy in operation.

education

There were 578 students on site in the 2007/2008 school year, 130 of whom were elementary school students and 448 secondary school students. There is a play group and four kindergartens, two elementary schools, two secondary schools (one of which is the ski middle school) and the Montafon music school. There is a polytechnic school in neighboring Bartholomäberg.
