history

The first settlement took place in the 11th or 12th century by Rhaeto-Romans . In the 14th century German-speaking Walser displaced the Romansh population. The ruling Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria ( Freiburg im Breisgau ). From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria , then again to Austria.

Blons has belonged to the Austrian state of Vorarlberg since it was founded in 1861. The place was part of the French zone of occupation in Austria from 1945 to 1955 .

Avalanche winter 1954

Between January 10 and 12, 1954, a total of 13 avalanches went off in Blons, killing 57 people. A memorial by Eugen Jussel still reminds of this today. The victims were buried in a communal grave near the churchyard.

Previous devastating avalanches fell in Blons in 1497, 1689, 1717, 1806, 1808 and 1853.

Population development

The proportion of non-Austrian citizens was 5.2 percent at the end of 2002 and 13.2 percent in 2018. About half of them came from Asia and a third from EU countries.

The migration balance has been negative since 1991 . Until 2001 this could be offset by a strongly positive birth balance. From 2001 to 2011, emigration increased, so that despite a positive birth balance, there was a decrease in the population.

politics

The community council consists of nine members. In the municipal council and mayoral elections in 2015, the election was not made by lists, but by majority vote. Mayor is Stefan Bachmann.
