history
The Walgau was already in the Stone Age and in the Bronze Age - i.e. 1250 BC. - settled by the Illyrian tribe from which the Raetians developed. Nüziders is considered to be the oldest settlement in Walgau and already had a certain importance in Roman times, as the Roman road from Reutte in Tyrol to Bregenz also led through Nüziders. Parts of an old Roman watchtower are still preserved today, which was converted into the bell tower of an early Christian church towards the end of the fifth century.
Hugo I († 1228) founded the Count family Montfort . He owned the county of Churrätien , Tettnang , Bregenz , Feldkirch , Sonnenberg , Werdenberg and Sargans . Nüziders was the headquarters of the County of Sonnenberg, which extends far beyond today's municipal boundaries .
The wealthy Vaistli also came from Nüziders and were based in Triesen and Vaduz in the 14th century. The Vaistli were servants of the Counts of Vaduz-Werdenberg. Later they were imperial bailiffs on Gutenberg, ammen in Vaduz, on the Eschnerberg and in Werdenberg.
1473 conquered and destroyed mercenaries under Burkhard von Knöringen on behalf Sigismund of Tyrol , the castle Sonnenberg . As a result, the Counts of Sonnenberg renounced their land in 1474 in favor of the Habsburgs, who with this conquest in Innerwalgau were able to rule over the area from the Arlberg to the Rhine.
The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol , or from Upper Austria from Freiburg im Breisgau . During the Napoleonic period from 1805 to 1814, the place belonged to Bavaria .
Bad Sonnenberg (also: Bad Nüziders) with its sulfur spring was already known in the Biedermeier period . In 1878 the bathing establishment was renovated, expanded and reopened, destroyed in a major fire in 1912. The healing spring is said to contain above all magnesium and iron and to help against rheumatism , gout , sciatica and gynecological problems.
In 1972 the largest forest fire in Austria at the time occurred at Hohen Fraßen . 41 fire brigades, 95 armed forces , helicopters, airplanes from the Swiss army and many volunteers fought the fire, which destroyed 100 hectares of forest.
Surname
The name Nüziders is said to come from the Rhaetian language and is first mentioned in the sources in 820 as Vicus Nezudene .
Etymologically, the name is also interpreted as a Rhaeto-Romanic or vulgar Latin modification of the Latin nucis terra , which means something like Nussland, Nussfeld or Nussdorf.
According to another opinion, the first part of the word is derived from the Latin fornaces for melting furnace and the second part of the word is derived from the indefinable ending dura . From fornacedura should then via the intermediates nacedura , nezedura , nezudera , nezuderes , nizidures , niziders have originated the current name.
