Dalaas is a municipality with 1600 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg in the Bludenz district .
geography
The southern part of the Dalaas area is characterized by the Klostertal , which is traversed from east to west by the Alfenz (connected to the river system of the Rhine) and traversed along it by the Arlberg expressway (S16 / E60). In the north of the Dalaas area you will find the Lechquellen Mountains with the Formarinsee in the northwest. In the western center is the Spullersee, which ultimately delivers its water to the Alfenz. In the south there are smaller parts of the much larger Verwall group . The town center itself is located in the valley floor near the Alfenz at about 835 meters above sea level at the foot of the Lechquellen Mountains (formerly also known as the “Klostertal Alps”). 28.4 percent of the area is forested , 25.6 percent of the area is Alps .
Community structure
The municipality includes the following two localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):
- Dalaas (982)
- Forest on the Arlberg (618)
The community consists of the Dalaas cadastral community .
Districts of the municipality are the main town of Dalaas and Wald am Arlberg, a little further into the valley, facing the Arlberg and the neighboring municipality of Klösterle .
Neighboring communities
The municipality of Dalaas borders on that of seven other municipalities in the Bludenz district. Clockwise around Dalaas, starting in the north, are the municipalities of Sonntag in the Großer Walsertal , Lech , Klösterle , Silbertal , Bartholomäberg , Innerbraz and Raggal . The neighboring communities of Klösterle and Innerbraz, like Dalaas, are located in Klostertal, with Klösterle in the valley at the beginning of the Klostertal on the Arlberg pass and Innerbraz out of the valley in the direction of the district capital Bludenz . Due to the valley location, there is only a direct road connection from Dalaas with these two neighboring communities.
history
Dalaas developed from a mining settlement that already existed around 1300. The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria ( Freiburg im Breisgau ).
The entire hinterland of the Walgau, especially the Klostertal, was considered a mining area. A focus of the mining activity was around 1355 on the northern slope of the Kristberg near Dalaas.
A Vorarlberg map from 1783 notes the place differently to today with the spelling "Talas" and the dominion area Sonnenberg (from Braz to Stuben) belongs.
From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria , then again to Austria. Dalaas has belonged to the Austrian state of Vorarlberg since the Vorarlberg Parliament was founded in 1861.
In June 1910, the place was hit by a devastating flood of the century: There were heavy rains and the delayed snowmelt after an extremely snowy winter. The fertile valley floors were graveled and unusable for agriculture. Dalaas was particularly badly affected by the romp of the Alfenz .
On April 29, 1945, French troops crossed the Vorarlberg border at Lochau and Hohenweiler . Before they could reach the Arlberg on May 6th, units of the Wehrmacht and the SS fought at Bregenz , Götzis , Bings and Dalaas, which also killed the civilian population and caused property damage. The place was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955.
In January 1954, Dalaas was hit by an avalanche disaster .

The proportion of foreigners at the end of 2002 was 6.3 percent.

Dalaas train station
Dalaas is located on the Arlbergbahn between Langen am Arlberg and Bludenz . The Wald am Arlberg train station, which is located in the municipality of Dalaas, was closed years ago. The Dalaas train station is still occupied, but only serves as an alternative and crossing point for the single-track railway line in the Dalaas area. The bus line 90 Stuben - Bludenz runs through the village in the valley floor and instead provides a connection to the public transport network. The current station building was rebuilt after the avalanche disaster of 1954 . The Muttentobella avalanche hurled a 120 t locomotive against the previous building, destroyed it and killed the family of railway workers living in it as well as passengers in the waiting room of the train trapped by avalanches in the station.
As early as 13 January 1924, the station area was a scene of devastation: 14 cars of a freight train going uphill pulled in the then United Tobel Tunnel , just over 1 km before Langen am Arlberg, at a train separation on the locomotive. They rolled backwards, after a ghostly drive over more than 9 km, finally raced towards Dalaas station at well over 100 km / h and could only be stopped there by a deliberately induced derailment.
Dalaas tunnel
The Arlberg expressway S16 leads through the 1810 meter long, single-tube Dalaaser tunnel. It is used to bypass Dalaas. About 90 to 100 meters of overburden are over the tunnel.
