history

The area of today's municipality of Bartholomäberg is likely to have been populated as early as the third millennium BC. At least settlement remains indicate that. As presumably in the Bronze and Iron Ages , Bartholomäberg was a center of mining throughout the Middle Ages : iron, copper and silver were extracted here. According to tradition, there was a parish in Bartholomäberg as early as 1100.

Mining was already practiced here in the Carolingian era and a silver mine has already been identified in 1319. This mining, which was successfully operated up to the 16th century, is documented. B. also in scenic peculiarities (Halden), in the miners' church on Kristberg, in the show mine in Bartholomäberg, which has been made accessible to visitors but now closed again, and in the mining museum in Silbertal.

Sankt Bartholomäberg appeared as the first parish in the Montafon in 1350. Bartholomäberg came to Austria in 1394 together with the Montafon . The Habsburgs ruled the places in Montafon alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria ( Freiburg im Breisgau ). From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria , then again to Austria. Bartholomäberg has belonged to the Austrian state of Vorarlberg since the establishment of the Vorarlberger Landtag in 1861. The place was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955.

coat of arms

Blazon : “In the tiller cut divided by red, silver and black, growing above a green mountain of three, a silver saint clad in gold and robed, in his right hand a silver knife, in the left a black book, in front two black crossed keys with three-pass tabs and behind two silver crossed hammers. "

Declaration of the coat of arms: The saint is the apostle Bartholomäus , whose knife reminds of the tormentors who skin the apostle, the two hammers (miner's mallets , see mallets and iron ) remind of the mining mentioned very early, the keys show that they belong to the Montafon (state seal since the early 15th century).

The municipal coat of arms is a Redendes coat of arms and was created in 1956 based on a design by the Schruns artist and heraldist Konrad Honold and the coat of arms was awarded by the Vorarlberg state government on August 17, 1956 (Zl. Ib-311).

Culture and sights

Parish Church of St. Bartholomew
Parish church “Maria Conception” on Innerberg
Interior on the Innerberg
  • The parish church of Bartholomäberg in a cemetery on a stepped terrain at 1000  m above sea level with a remarkable view of the Rätikon and the Silvretta is a richly furnished baroque church with a remarkable baroque organ, a Gothic sacristy and a Gothic winged altar as a former high altar and a Romanesque lecture cross from Limoges around 1150.
  • The Kuratienkirche Innerberg im Innerberg stands in the middle of the cemetery. The foundation stone was laid in 1791. The master builder was the Schrunser Josef Vonier, who also created the dome of the Bartholomäberger Church. The church was inaugurated on July 4, 1820. The altarpiece of the high altar shows the Immaculate , the head wreathed with roses, painted in 1869 by the Schruns artist Franz Bertle (1828–1883). The left side altar has contained a valuable Gothic Madonna from around 1500 since 1993. The original version was uncovered in painstaking detail by the restorer Konrad Honold. One of the most beautiful pieces of the church is the splendidly gilded and marbled pulpit with the portraits of the four evangelists Johannes, Markus, Lukas and Matthäus. The last major renovation took place between 1991 and 1993 to mark the 200th anniversary of the church.
  • The parish church of Gantschier as a church building of the modern age stands in the valley floor in Gantschier and was raised in 2013 by Bishop Benno Elbs to the 126th parish church of the diocese of Feldkirch. The acquired organ was consecrated at the parish celebration.
  • The Museum Frühmesshaus Bartholomäberg was opened in 2009. The old Frühmesshaus in Bartholomäberg, dating from 1657, is one of the oldest buildings in the valley and has been adapted for museum purposes. At first the house was shown as the last owner left it. The visitors thus had the opportunity to take part in a museum development process in the following years.

Geological educational hiking trail and Bartholomäberg historical mine

The geological educational hiking trail in Bartholomäberg was opened in 1978. The consistently marked alpine hiking trail over the Monteneu mountain range is a circular route that begins and ends at the Bartholomäberg church. It is almost 16 km long and requires about 10 hours of hiking time for a total ascent. Of this, 4–5 hours are pure walking time. 24 information boards along the way give an insight into 1000 million years of Montafon's geological history. Different rocks, their age, their formation and composition are explained. At the same time, the mountain construction of the surrounding mountain ranges is explained and an insight into the growth and decay of the rocks and mountains is given.

From the parking lot at the church of Bartholomäberg ( 1087  m ), where there is an orientation board , the educational hiking trail leads in a north-westerly direction to the Rellseck (Alpen-Gasthaus, 1492  m ). There are four outcrops one after the other along this section of the path, which are explained on stone description boards. From the former Gasthaus Linda ( 1215  m ) there is a view of the Rätikon in the southwest of the Illtal. Immediately in the foreground rises the Tschaggunser Mittagspitze ( 2168  m ), in the background the Sulzfluh ( 2818  m ) and to the northwest of it the Drei Türme , the Eisjöchl and the Drusenfluh , all around 2830  m , can be made out.

At the Alpengasthaus Rellseck, the path turns right and climbs in a north-easterly direction over the ridge of the Monteneu up to the Wannaköpfle ( 2032  m ). The promising Itonskopf (at 2089  m above sea level, the highest point of the mountain range) remains on the left and the path reaches the summit of the Alpilakopf ( 2078  m ). The Wannaköpf - Itonskopf - Alpilakopf ( Itonskopfgruppe ) ridge is made up of main dolomite and underlaid by massive plaster of paris from the Raibler layers . The path continues to the Upper Meadow , where you come across a fossil coral reef (natural monument). The Rhätolias reef limestone was formed in a sea of the Jura. Well-preserved coral sticks, shells and sea lilies can be seen here.

From the Obere Wies ( 1880  m ) you can see in a northerly direction into the cut and onto the almost 2000 meter high steep slope of the Klostertal with the Rote Wand ( 2890  m ) as the highest peak. After circumnavigating the Schwarzhorn ( 1883  m ) , the path leads back to the starting point via Fall - Ammans Legi - Tora See - Fula See - Friitza Legi - Knappa Gruaba . The Knappagruaba panorama board ( 1340  m ) indicates mining as a landscape designer. The ore mining for iron, copper and silver, which flourished from the 9th to the 17th century, rummaged through the slopes like a mole. The spoil heaps shape the landscape here. Former tunnel entrances can still be seen in the area. Here, near Worms, is also the historic Bartholomäberg mine (St. Anna Stollen) , a show mine that was opened in 2010.

The hiking trail is equally accessible in both directions. Numerous hiking and driving paths cross the educational trail and allow partial inspections.

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2003 there were 18 commercial enterprises with 77 employees and eight apprentices on site. There were 911 employees subject to income tax. In the 2006/2007 tourism year there were a total of 97,424 overnight stays (winter 54,317, summer 43,107).

There are two kindergartens in Bartholomäberg; in the 2007/2008 school year there were 177 pupils in the community, 100 of whom attended the two primary schools. In addition, there is a Polytechnic School in Outside Montafon .
