Worms is a settlement near a prehistoric mining area in the municipality of Bartholomäberg . Today the district only consists of a homestead and a few mountain huts.

geography

The district is located above the village center of the municipality Bartholomäberg on the slope of the mountain range of the western Verwalls resp. the southern flank of the Wannaköpfle (2032 m above sea level) and Itonskopf (2089 m above sea level).

East are the Vorsäß Sasella , north the Almein and the little Fritzensee (Fritzasee). To the south the village center of Bartholomäberg, to the west the district of Lutt.

History, geology and mining, show mine

An interdisciplinary research project in the Montafon was devoted to questions of the oldest settlement history of a valley landscape and the prehistoric use of copper and iron ores in an inner-Alpine settlement chamber. And to what extent the hillside settlements, cultivation, pasture use and arable farming, were influenced by mining activities.

The traces of mining on Bartholomäberg go back to the Stone Age , traces of settlement are 7000 years old. Silver, iron and copper, among other things, were extracted here in the narrow Grauwackenzone . Mining in the Montafon flourished in the high and late Middle Ages and ended in the 16th century. In the parcel of Worms, the former Knappagruaba mining area , 150 tunnels were in operation at times, the traces are visible in the area (overgrown dumps).

There are showpieces in the Silbertal Museum , and in 2010 the St. Anna tunnel was opened at the Garsellaalpe as the only show mine in Vorarlberg to date . It was created at the instigation of the Historical Mine Association . It is part of the Bartholomäberger Geological Educational Trail .

tourism

In addition to the mine , to which there are shuttle buses from Bartholomäberg when the tour is open, the Worms area and the entire “sun route” are popular hiking areas. Numerous paths lead here into the Verwall, towards the Silbertal and as high-altitude paths out of the Illtal.
