history

The first settler was the hermit Gerold von Großwalsertal around 950 . A monastery was built over his grave, the Provostry Sankt Gerold , in the vicinity of which Romansh soon settled. The pilgrimage church was consecrated in 1313. In the 14th century, German-speaking Walser displaced the Romansh population. Until 1648 the provost was under the sovereignty of Blumenegg and from then until 1802 it was imperial provost of the prince abbey of Einsiedeln .

Through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 St. Gerold came to Nassau-Oranien-Fulda , which sold it to Austria in 1804. In 1805 the place became part of Bavaria . During this time (1808) the place became an independent municipality. From 1814 it belonged again to Austria and thus to Vorarlberg, whose fortunes it has shared since then. The provost's office, which was a monastery until 1958 and a church educational establishment since then, is still the property of Einsiedeln Monastery.

Population development

The proportion of foreigners (22 people) at the end of 2002 was 6.2 percent.

From 1991 to 2001 the birth balance and migration balance were positive. After that, emigration increased so much until 2011 that it could not be compensated by the birth rate and there was a decline in the population.

The municipal council of St. Gerold consists of nine members. In the 2015 municipal council election, the election was not made by party lists, but by majority vote.

Blazon : The coat of arms is split in white and blue. On the right the hermit Gerold with a red cloak holding the golden orb in his left hand, the pilgrim's staff in the other and gold-nimbed. On the left is an erect silver ibex .
