Laterns is a municipality in Austria in Vorarlberg in the Feldkirch district with 666 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

geography

Laterns is located in the westernmost state of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the Feldkirch district at 921 meters above sea level in the elongated Laternsertal and extends to the Furkajoch (1761 m). With a municipality area of ​​43.75 km², Laterns is the largest municipality in the Feldkirch district in terms of area. 40.9% of the area is forested, 45.3% belong to the Alps. The Hochrohkopf lies on the border with the neighboring municipality of Damüls . The districts of the municipality are: Innerlaterns, Laterns-Bonacker, Laterns-Thal.

Neighboring communities

Laterns is one of only two communities in Vorarlberg that borders on all of the country's political districts. Even in the Feldkirch district, Laterns borders the city of Dornbirn in the Dornbirn district of the same name , Damüls in the Bregenz district , Blons , St. Gerold and Thüringerberg in the Bludenz district and the communities Schnifis , Dünserberg , Übersaxen , Rankweil and Zwischenwasser in the same district as the Walser community. This results in a common municipal boundary with ten other municipalities.

history

As early as the Romansh period, parts of the area were used for alpine farming and hunting. The main town of the Laternser valley was mentioned in a document in 1177 as Montem Clauturni and was known as Glaterns until the 17th century. The actual settlement took place, as with many settlements in the side valleys of Vorarlberg, by the Walsers at the beginning of the 14th century. The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria (Freiburg im Breisgau). From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria, then again to Austria. For Austrian province of Vorarlberg Laterns heard since its founding in 1861. The place was 1945-1955 part of the French zone of occupation in Austria.

The coat of arms of the municipality of Laterns was awarded on July 22, 1938. It shows a shield split by silver and red, which is traversed by an inserted, ascending, curved blue tip that extends to the head of the shield. On it there are eleven five-pointed stars with alternating tinctures in vertical rows, four in each shield field, and three - the bottom of which is penetrated by the tip - slightly raised on the dividing line. At the top rises from the raised central dome a green overgrown three-piece, a rooted, golden-fertilized fir tree.

In terms of design, the coat of arms is strongly based on that of the canton of Valais , which was expressly approved by the State Council of the same in 1936. The coat of arms was designed in 1936 by the "Zimbapfarrer" Gebhard Wendelin Gunz.

Sports

The Laterns-Gapfohl ski area is located in the municipality . This has a detachable 4-seater chairlift, a detachable 6-seater chairlift and three drag lifts. There are also several restaurants in the area of ​​the ski area.

In the summer months there is a summer toboggan run under the 4-seater chairlift . There are also numerous hiking trails in the area of ​​the ski area. The most prominent peak in the municipality of Laterns is the Hohe Freschen (2004 m).

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2010 there were 48 agricultural and forestry operations in Laterns, nine of which were full-time businesses. In the secondary economic sector , 27 people were employed in eleven companies, the majority in the manufacture of goods. The tertiary economic sector offered 69 people work in 32 companies, around half in social and public services (as of 2011).

Tourism and tourism are important. In 2017 there were 23,442 overnight stays with a peak in the months of January, February and March.

The village is connected to Damüls by a state road via Zwischenwasser and, during the summer months, via the Furkajoch, which is closed in winter due to the risk of avalanches, to the Bregenzerwald or the Große Walsertal .

Medicinal baths

In the Laternsertal there were two therapeutic baths with sulfur springs since the Middle Ages. The spa in the Vorderbad Laterns existed until the 19th century and in Bad Innerlaterns until the beginning of the 20th century. Bad Innerlaterns is now just an inn and a popular starting point for hikes.
