history

The first ascent of the Hohe Freschen on skis around 1905 is now considered the “first milestone” in the history of skiing in the region. In the winter of 1925/26, the newly founded ski team of the Greater German gymnastics club Rankweil leased the alpine hut in Gapfohl for the first time , while the politically competitive ski team of the Christian- social gymnastics association, founded three years later, used the alpine hut of the Valduna estate in Furx as a clubhouse. Both clubs opened up the area between Furx and Hohem Freschen for winter sports, at that time mainly in the discipline of cross-country skiing , especially at the annual Freschenlauf.

After the Second World War , an apolitical association of skiers, which has been known as the “Rankweil Ski Club” since 1949, was created in place of the earlier party-bound associations. Unknown had completely plundered the Gapfohl alpine hut in the spring of 1945, on the other hand, after the war, the inventory of the hut in Furx was still almost completely available, so that the activities initially concentrated on this area. It was not until 1950 that the Gapfohlalpe was leased again. Beginning in the winter of 1955/56, the association organized the Freschen giant slalom on the Falben every year, which contributed significantly to increasing awareness of the ski area.

The increasing use of the area for winter sports and snow security prompted the ski club to build its own clubhouse near the alpine hut between 1961 and 1965. Ski courses were offered as early as the first winter after its completion, with a self-made “cable car” serving as a lift, on whose rope the skiers could be pulled up.

The final development as a tourist winter sports area began in 1972 with the construction of a double chair lift and two drag lifts. In 1977 a natural toboggan run was laid out. The summer toboggan run , which opened in 1997, is the main attraction of the area outside of winter.
