The Laternsertal is an eastern side valley of the Rhine Valley in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg . It is traversed by the Frutz river , flowing in a westerly direction towards the Rhine , and is a classic alpine notch valley . At Rankweil the valley joins the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley with a length of around 10 kilometers . In the north lies the Freschengruppe ( Hoher Freschen , 2004 m, the Matona , 1997 m Gerenfalben , 1938 m) of the Bregenzerwald Mountains , in the south the Walserkamm ( spoon tip , 1962 m).

The Laternsertal was settled in the Middle Ages by immigrant Walsers , who - endowed with extensive self-administration rights - settled in the Frutz valley. The only community in the Laternsertal, Laterns , is still populated by descendants of these Walsers. Laterns itself is divided into the districts Innerlaterns, Bonacker and Thal.

The Laternserstraße (L 51), which runs through the Laternsertal, connects the Frutz valley with the Argenbach valley near Damüls and thus with the Bregenzerwald via the Furkajoch . In terms of transport, there is a direct connection from the Rhine Valley to the rear Bregenzerwald via the Laternsertal .
