geography
Damüls is the highest holiday resort between the Bregenz Forest and the Großer Walsertal and is located in the westernmost state of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the Bregenz district at 1,423 meters above sea level. The community is located in the valley of the Argenbach , nestled between the Damüls mountains in the north, and the Zitterklapfen group of the Lechquellen mountains and the Glatthorn group on the Faschinajoch in the south. 17.7% of the area is forested, 60.0% of the area of the Alps.
The community area is accessed through the ski area of the same name and offers a good infrastructure for hiking and mountain tourism even in the summer season. In 2006 Damüls was awarded the title of "snowiest village in the world"; an average of 9.30 meters of fresh snow falls per season.
There are no other cadastral communities in Damüls.
Neighboring communities
Damüls is one of two municipalities in Vorarlberg that borders on all political districts of the state. Located in the Bregenz district, Damüls borders the town of Dornbirn in the Dornbirn district , Laterns in the Feldkirch district , Blons and Fontanella in the Bludenz district and the communities of Mellau and Au in the same district as the Walser community. This results in a common municipal boundary with six other municipalities.
history
In the late Middle Ages (around 1300) people from the Swiss canton of Valais left their homeland because of great poverty and looked for new living spaces. In Vorarlberg , in the west of Tyrol and in Graubünden these emigrants, later known as Walser , were given remote, impassable and undeveloped valleys for clearing and settlement (Alpe Uga ). The first documentary mention of Damüls comes from a deed of May 29, 1313 from the Counts of Montfort . The owners were free farmers on free floes, but had to serve the counts with shield and spear if necessary.
In 1390 Damüls came under the rule of Feldkirch to Austria .
Until 1806 Damüls had their own court together with Fontanella (so-called upper court). The Damüls community came from the Bludenz district to the Bregenz district on June 1, 1870 .
Population development
On January 1, 2008, the proportion of the population with non-Austrian citizenship was 8.9%. The proportion of those not born in Austria was 11.1%.
politics
The Damüls municipal council consists of nine members, all of whom belong to the Damüls list after the 2015 municipal council election . Stefan Bischof has been the mayor of the community since April 2010.
Culture and sights
- Catholic parish church Damüls hl. Nikolaus: The church is in an exposed position above the settlement and is surrounded by the cemetery in the SW. It was rebuilt in 1484 by Rolle Maiger from Röthis in place of a chapel in the Gothic style mentioned in a document in 1392 and redesigned in Baroque style between 1693 and 1733. The frescoes uncovered in 1950 represent the so-called " poor Bible ". Tufa-lime was used for the building .
- Former school below the church
- Chapel Stofel on the Alpe Oberdamüls
- Natural monument road near Alpe Brand at around 1650 m above sea level
- Damüls circuit
- Around the Walser settlement
The Damüls circuit runs above the tree line and can be reached with the UGA-Express. The UGA-Express is a chair lift that seats up to four people next to each other and can be used free of charge with the Bregenzerwaldcard.
The valley station with the large car park can be reached by post bus from the Au post office .
The circuit is well signposted. You can climb from one peak to the next from the mountain station ( 1800 m ), from Hochblanken ( 2068 m ) over the Ragazer Blanken ( 2051 m ) to the Sünser Joch . You can stop for a snack before or after returning from the circuit in one of the numerous huts for a snack (Austrian: snack ).
You can either take the cable car to the valley, or you can make your way back on foot (approx. Two hours for slow walkers), you come out at the valley station ( 1430 m ).
Economy and Infrastructure
tourism
On the cut-off date of the census on October 31, 2011, there were 83 workplaces in Damüls with a total of 182 employees, 8 of them apprentices. With almost half of the workplaces and more than a third of the employees, tourism is by far the most important branch of the economy. In the 2016/2017 tourism year, 280,317 overnight stays were counted, making Damüls the most popular place in the Bregenzerwald.
Winter sports destination
In 2009, the connection with the Mellau ski area was completed with the construction of the summit lift (8-seater gondolas, length 1851 meters), which led to a considerable increase in the size of the ski area. Today the combined mountain railways Damüls – Mellau (Damüls Mellau ski area) and the Faschina cable cars ( Faschina – Fontanella ski area ) work together to form the Faschina – Damüls – Mellau ski area . As a result of this merger, the ski area has 109 kilometers of slopes. The 6-seater Ragaz chairlift was built in the summer of 2010 and began operating on December 18, 2010. In 2014, the DSB Sunnegg from 1982 was replaced by a modern 6-seater Doppelmayr chairlift. The new system will also replace the ridge lift leading to ski route 3. The system has been in operation since winter 2014/2015.
