Chapel of Stofel
The Stofel Chapel is a small chapel on a prominent vantage point on the Oberdamüls Alpe in the Bregenzerwald community of Damüls in the Bregenz district of Vorarlberg . It has been a listed building since 1995 . It is a silent monument of peasant piety in earlier times.
history
In 1313 the Walser received the Alpe Damüls as an inheritance . Until the climate deteriorated in 1549, the Alpe was partially populated all year round. It was then divided into the Oberdamüls and Unterdamüls Alps. Except for the chapel, all buildings from this period have been removed. The age of the chapel itself cannot be precisely dated. The year 1689 is written on a lintel , but it does not have to be the year of construction. In 1995 the chapel was placed under monument protection due to its uniqueness and restored.
Building description and equipment
The chapel is covered with a very flat gable roof made of large stone slabs. The floor is also covered with stone slabs.
The altarpiece shows " Mary with the child". In the lower part of the picture the saints Nicholas , Martin and Antonius are depicted.
The chapel was probably painted in color earlier.
