history

Early history

The first documentary mention of Gaißau took place around 900 AD in a description of the municipality " Mark der Höchst ".

More precise names for "Gaysowe" only begin in the 14th century, when the Au between Rheineck (today in Switzerland ), St. Margrethen and Höchst belonging to the "Mark Höchst", came to Austria via the Counts of Feldkirch. According to the latest historical research it has been proven that "Gaißow bi Rinegg" was a double courtyard.

The name Gaißau was created around 1400 and has since stood for today's municipality.

Changing ownership and affiliation

From 1405 to 1408 the area from the mouth of the Rhine to Fußach was part of Feldkirch in the federal government ob the lake under St.Gallen and Appenzell rule. The owners were subsequently the Lords of Rheineck , later ownership passed to the St. Gallen monastery . Even after the Treaty of Basel in 1499, the St. Gallen monastery retained most of the rights until it was dissolved in 1798. In the monastery archive you can read: "Gaißawer belonged to Höchst in the parish churches, to Bregentz in war, toe Rorschach in Gricht, zue Gaißaw in Kirchhoff, to Veldtkich an Galgen. "

From 1500 Gaißau is independent. In 1755, the abbot of St. Gallen confirmed the municipal code, but had the final say on municipal resolutions. By 1783 at the latest, the area probably belonged to the County of Hohenems, which fell to the Habsburgs in 1765 . In 1798 Gaißau finally moved under the full sovereignty of Austria .

Recent changes

If before 1934 the community was headed by an ammann, captain or chief, from 1934 this was a mayor.

Until December 31, 1929, Gaißau was assigned to the Feldkirch district administration and the Dornbirn district court, but on January 1, 1930, due to traffic-related reasons, changed to the jurisdiction of the district administration and the district court of Bregenz . From 1938 to 1946 Gaißau was merged with the neighboring communities of Fußach and Höchst in the community of Rheinau.
