The Roman Catholic parish church Gaißau is located in the municipality of Gaißau in the Bregenz district in Vorarlberg . It is consecrated to St. Othmar and belongs to the dean's office in Dornbirn in the diocese of Feldkirch . The building is a listed building .

The church is a neo-Gothic stone building that is free - standing on all sides and dominates the center of Gaißau. The choir is oriented to the northeast. The only tower is built over the main entrance.

Location description

The parish church of St. Othmar is located in the center of Gaißau, directly on the L 19 state road, which leads to the Rhine and the federal border to Rheineck ( Switzerland ). On the northeast side, the church property is delimited by Sonnenfeldstrasse, and on the southwestern side by Kirchstrasse.

history

The current parish church was built in 1870, on the special initiative of the pastor Anton Zimmermann (pastor in Gaißau since 1860). Before that there was a chapel (built in 1760).

The solemn laying of the foundation stone for today's church took place on April 2nd, 1870 by Pastor Zimmermann as representative of the bishop and on July 7th, 1873 the church was consecrated by the vicar general.

The church was extensively renovated in 1983 and 2011 and the interior design was reduced to the bare essentials. The previously existing large number of holy figures from the 17th century and a Gothic relief from 1500 were retained, as were the wooden pews and the paneling.

Sanctuary

Herbert Albrecht's stone altar seems to grow out of the floor of the church and is supposed to symbolize the connection to the earth. To the left and right of the altar there are glass paintings by Hubert Berchtold .

The parish church of St. Othmar is located on the mezzanine a simple organ of the company. Rieger Organ Builders ( Schwarzach ) from 1989. Previously, an organ of the brothers Mayer from 1936 in use.

relic

In the parish church in the chancel in a shrine there is a part of a finger of St. Othmar as a relic .

The cemetery is right next to the parish church on the north-north-western side and the parish hall afterwards with traditional earth graves and an urn wall made of tamped clay .

Parish Hall

The Gaißau parish hall is located next to the church and the cemetery on Kirchstrasse. It is a Thurgau half-timbered house from the 15th century with a brick base. The house was built in 1735 by Johannes Lutz as the "Zur Rose" inn . Since 1789 it has been mainly used as a parsonage and for parish activities. B. as a school house (1808–1884) or as an emergency church (1870–1873), but also as a parking space for the local fire engine etc.
