Rieger Orgelbau is an Austrian organ building company that goes back to the company founded by Franz Rieger in 1845 in Jägerndorf (Austrian Silesia) . It has been based in Schwarzach , Vorarlberg, since 1946 .
In the Czech town of Krnov , formerly Jägerndorf, the Rieger-Kloss company also continued to produce organs until it ceased operations in 2015.
history
Franz Rieger
Franz Rieger learned organ building from Franz Seyberth in Vienna. Since around 1841 he has been building organs in the Jägerndorf area . In 1844 he founded his own workshop there and in 1845 created his Opus 1 for the Burgbergkirche there with 20 stops , two manuals and a pedal . He built mechanical organs with slider chests. In total there were about 32 in Austrian Silesia , Bohemia and Moravia .
Otto and Gustav Rieger
His sons Otto Anton Rieger (born March 3, 1847 in Jägerndorf, † December 12, 1903 in Jägerndorf) and Gustav Rieger (born August 1, 1848 in Jägerndorf, † June 20, 1920 in Vienna) first learned from their father, then from Franz Ullmann in Vienna and Balthasar Schlimbach in Würzburg. In 1873 they took over the workshop as Franz Rieger & Sons . The opus count began again. With their first organ they won the Progress Medal at the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873. Commissions in Vienna (1874), Hungary (1875) and Norway (1876) followed. In 1878 they received the gold medal for two salon organs at the World Exhibition in Paris.
In 1879 they built a new, larger factory and named it the Rieger brothers . They built organs as far as Gibraltar, Istanbul, Jerusalem and Rome. In 1890 a branch was opened in Budapest , in which around 600 new organs were built and rebuilt.
Otto and Gustav Rieger were appointed royal court purveyors in 1896 , and in 1899 they were made knights of the Franz Joseph Order , Otto Rieger also knights of the Order of St. Gregory. At the turn of the century, around 200 employees worked in the company, there was a workers' settlement and its own health insurance company.
During this period, the company began to develop a program of 25 small organs, between two and twelve voices, from eight voices on two manuals, as an alternative to the cheaper harmonium. By 1903, 1306 organs were built or rebuilt (opus number).
Otto Rieger
Otto Rieger (born May 22, 1880 in Jägerndorf, † March 28, 1920 ibid) was a son of Otto Anton Rieger. He learned from his father and took over the company after his death in 1903. Gustav Rieger retired.
After the First World War , the company found itself in the Czech state, and a difficult phase of adjustment followed.
Josef von Glatter-Götz
Josef von Glatter-Götz took over the management in 1920 and bought the company in 1924. In 1925 production could be fully resumed with a workforce of 100.
In 1938/1939 the Rieger family accounted for 66% of total German exports. During these years there was movement in the art of organ building, and the associated diversity was also reflected in the Rieger house. Organs were delivered in large numbers to the Baltic States, Scandinavia, South America, South Africa, China and Israel. In the course of the 1930s, Egon and Josef von Glatter-Götz joined the company. While Josef von Glatter-Götz was mainly concerned with the technology, his brother had focused on the tonal and artistic design of the instruments. Egon von Glatter-Götz died as a soldier in September 1939 during the attack on Poland .
In the war years from 1943 to 1945, the construction of organs was prohibited, and ammunition skis had to be built in the company .
Schwarzach
In 1945 the company left Jägerndorf and moved to Schwarzach in Vorarlberg. The company premises were nationalized and the Czech company Rieger-Kloss was founded there.
Shortly before the Second World War, the organ building company Anton Behmann had sent Rieger an offer of cooperation. That is why the company leased the workshops in 1946. Under the most difficult conditions, the construction of handlooms and windows as well as the operation of a sauna kept afloat.
In 1950 he made the leap across the Atlantic, where a positive with six registers was exhibited at the Chicago World's Fair and then sold. With the development of a series of small organs, the breakthrough was gradually made in the post-war years. In mid-1969, the eldest son, Caspar Glatter-Götz, joined the company as operations manager. Under his leadership, a new company building was built in 1972 and significant quality improvements were made, in particular to the mechanical action. The youngest son Christoph Glatter-Götz joined the company in 1977 and took over organ sales from his father Joseph Glatter-Götz. Also in 1977, the middle son Raimund Glatter-Götz (born January 1, 1948, † March 16, 2013) joined the company and devoted himself to organ design. His artistic activity shaped the style of the company until his death. In 1980 Josef Glatter-Götz retired and handed the business over to his sons. In 1993 Caspar Glatter-Götz left the company and founded his own company in Owingen, Baden-Württemberg, under his name. Wendelin Eberle took over his position as operations manager. After Christoph Glatter-Götz left the company for health reasons in 2003, Wendelin Eberle took over his position and shortly afterwards the entire company. Today, Rieger runs a project, among other things, in which disabled people are given training in the field of manufacturing keyboards and mechanical parts.
In the beginning Rieger built typically German-Romantic organs, although few original arrangements have survived, so little can be said about Rieger's early style. Many of them were later changed and have therefore not been preserved in the original. At the beginning of the 19th century, Rieger managed with comparatively few 8 ' registers , and in contrast to the German-Romantic organ , occupied the swell works with generous amounts and many reeds . After the war, the new company in Schwarzach worked under extremely difficult financial conditions. So she couldn't afford to develop her own style, so she moved with the German companies and built large-scale neo-baroque instruments. But as early as 1965, earlier than in any other company, the first typically romantic beats appeared in the swell works, which increased over time, but the number of 8 'registers in the other works remained small. When interest in French organs increased in the 1970s, Rieger immediately went down a new path, building more 8 'stops and strong French bombards in the pedal (even on smaller organs) instead of the usual trombones. The use of 8 'registers is still comparatively low today, more than four are usually only found in the swell. The style changed again with the takeover by Eberle, the bombards often built by Christoph Glatter-Götz became rarer, just like the 8 'registers. The Rieger organ of the Jesuit Church St. Michael in Munich, inaugurated in October 2011 (reorganization of a Sandtner organ from 1983) with 4 manuals and 75 registers, however, again shows a strong emphasis on the 8 'position, also in the newly built swell more German-romantic Expression.
In 1988 the company received the right to use the national coat of arms in business dealings.
At the moment (as of 2019) the company is restoring the organ of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, the largest church organ in Austria.
